What can I say? My previous comments re working with wood and splinters were maybe... too hasty?? 8)

not at all

if you really want to use ply you can lip it with a hard wood to effectively seal the edges. In fact this is something i was going to do if i had not had the slab of ash in the way and i think would work well.

If you use a 1/4" strip glued on the edge with titebond3 held there with blue tape until it sets and then sand it down flush you will have something that will last with no splinters.

this is not a great photo but shows ply lipped with softwood in this case as it is being laminated. But you get the principle.

Doesn't solve the slot issue without some very fancy joinery though!

Well, i have a new take

http://www.ullrich-aluminium.co.nz/broc ... ystems.pdf

Aluminum bench seat extrusion. 4 meters for $70.00 Light, easy to work with, and only needs 1800mm between support centres.....perfect.

With fitted end caps and options back rest,..That's a winner. Nice post Worky.

Agreed. The seat extrusion should make a great haka. I did look at using it ages ago but then someone gave me the alu/foam sandwich and I went with that.
A 2m haka with end caps would weigh a bit over 6kg plus whatever hardware you chose for attaching it to the haka. The "C" profile would require some adapting to fit over the aka bar.
I'm not sure about the $70/4m price though. :?
I checked with the manufacturer today and a 4m length of seat extrusion costs around AU$220 and a 6m length around AU$330. End caps are about AU$10 each.
Still cheap for a maintenance free haka! 8)

CC,
Thanks for the splinter fix. 8)
My woodworking skills are very limited though and you're probably not going to like this but I hate working with wood! Give me metal anyday (that's what Chrisj was referring to with his comment.)
If I do go ahead with the marine ply haka then the risk of splinters would be something the users will just have to put up with!

Actually I also did some enquiring and was quoted the following:
2 metre length ( clear coated to prevent oxidisation) $A60.50 each
End caps $A11 each.

So a pair with end caps at each end would be $A155

Now THAT is an attractive price! The weight is quite reasonable too

They also make marine-rated aluminum extrusions. Likely you won't find these profiles though.

Can't wait to see a shiny new pair and find out if they last.

WELL,.. WHAT ARE YOU GUYS WAITING FOR?!!?

That's a much better price Tony. I rang the Newcastle office. Where did you get that quote from?

I live in Sydney and also very interested in getting this bench to install on my TI. Can they deliver or I need to go there to pick up. So the price is only for the horizontal seat or it includes the back rest as well?

@stringy: I had never picked up a circular saw when I made mine and they turned out OK. It doesn't have to be high quality joinery to be functional (without detracting from chopcat's beautiful creations). I'm about to make a Mark#3 quarterdeck and I'm thinking of using only marine adhesive to hold it together (lighter, cheaper, easier).

I originally looked at aluminium bench extrusions too. For the ones I saw, I reckon you'd want three per haka. They are not completely maintenance free if you use stainless steel screws to hold them together (the old galvanic corrosion problem).

Good points Chris.
Looks like the benches are around 28cm wide which, whilst a bit on the narrow side, should work OK.

Stringy, that's odd, because I got the quotes from the Newcastle office too...

Chrisj, galvanic corrosion could be cancelled as an issue if you join any (aluminium) mounting brackets using aluminium rivets rather than screws.

I am thinking of glueing hard rubber on the top surface of the akas, and along the relevant section of the bottom of the bench extrusion, and hold them in place with bungee cords

Tony,
That is very odd. I've just rung that 1300 number (on the brochure) again and she confirmed the original price quoted to me. I checked and the 2m length is $98+gst so similar cost/m.
She also said that mine was the only enquiry she'd had today.
What number were you ringing? :?

Better still connect the stainless steel rivets in the haka to the stainless steel rivets in the Aka. Then the galvanic corrossion in the haka will cancel out the galvanic corrosion in the aka. I'm a Chemist, I know these things.
