I have 2 small tears. One not all the way through but looks like just mostly red material of sail and looks like part of clear. Applied Tear Aid-Type A but it does not seem like it wants to stick real well or hold. I kept rubbing it in and did not seem like it wants to stay. I added a little heat with hair dryer and seems it is a little better but not real confident will hold with sail full of wind.

Other tear I noticed runs through clear plastic mostly down to red edge material and this tear goes through on both sides of clear section. I applied Tear Aid-Type A tape again and it sticks a lot better to the clear than red material of sail. I noticed with rubbing tape on sail that the rough sections of sail and little black plastic lines in sail are popping through tape. I added another little section of repair tape but I am worried with full sail that pressure on tape and rough sections of plastic will wear through tape quickly.

I thought this tape would be a little more durable. I started reading kite boarding forms and windsurfing forums for some ideas.

Should I cut out rough sections? Sail repair is not my strength. Plus these sails have more plastic or different different material than other sails I have had to do a quick fix on in past.

Are there better tapes for Hobie Island Sail material or is my method wrong?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.ImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

Hi!

Have you tried KITEAID Clear Sail Repair?
We have had customers use it for landsailing sails that had a mix of dacron and mylar sails.
We also have a LE and Strut repair kit at KITEAID that is made for repairing dacron parts on a kite. It will most likely work for you hobie cat since kites hit the water and sand much more often than sails used for boats...

Let me know if you have any question.

Worth a try. Send our friend a free sample, Steve and you might get some converts here.

And a sample to NOHUHU as he's been known to shred a sail or two!

I have not tried KITEAID yet. I probably should pick some up and try out because I don't think Tear-Aid Type-A is going to work or last much more than one time out if I was lucky. I prepped and cleaned the sail well and it appears the stuff I used does not stick to red fabric very well.

My clear pannel is on the way out after 2.5 years. Local sailmaker offered repair for $50 with stick on film and or superior new custom race sail for $600. That's about $100 less than a Hobie mass produced sail - mmmmmm.

My sail seems to be holding up so far after over 80 outings, but I had to replace the telltales as they were frayed and tending to catch on the seams.

So what's the longest we seem capable of owning our sails, under "normal" use? Say 3 interesting salt water sails a month?

I think the Aussies would be good test subjects for this, vs the lake dwellers.

Products tend to be made cheaper over time, so I wonder if this has had any effect on AI/TI owners. Anyone failed a TI sail yet?

If you pull the sail across to tack, don't respond. You are a naughty sailor. ;-)

A wild guess as to sailing hours for my AI sail - 600hrs in salt water. Sail cleaned regularly every 200hrs, not bad.

Did the KiteAid work? I'm need to repair a hole in the clear section of the sail.

There has been no reduction in quality.

Primary concerns with the sail materials are luffing and UV. Keep it covered when not in use. Avoid luffing (flapping) when ever possible. Keeping some tension on the main sheet helps.

My telltales have also frayed and are catching on the seams to the point of being useless and my TI is less than one year old. What did you use to replace the telltales?
