I wanted to share my sailing design with the forum. This design may not be reproduced for profit. I assume absolutely no liability what so ever in sharing this design. Thanks

The sail can be furled and unfurled from the cockpit.

Amas can be raised out of the water for peddling, lowered for sailing, or pushed deep for stability when fishing, all from the comfort of your seat. Amas are deep and narrow to eliminate the need for dagger board.
Image
Amas are made from 1/8 door skins and covered with polyester cloth and epoxy.
Image
The out riggers fold up for easy storage and transport. They connect to the kayak with quick release pins. The amas pivot on the ends of the outrigger assembly and are connect with quick collars.
Image
The aluminum mast slides over a stainless shaft and is secured with a quick release pin.
Image
The above assembly contains 4 sets of bearing races machined from delrin and the ball bearings are plastic airsoft BB pellets.

Feel free to ask me questions about structural details, etc. There is just to much to this project to detail here, it would just take too much space and time, but I am willing to answer specific questions.

I'll try to get one of my fishing buddies to take some pics the next time we go out. Thanks for the compliment. I built this in 2009 and I have really enjoyed sailing and fishing with it.

Fantastic mod but why would you bother given that there is already a perfectly serviceable rig available?

I made the mount and the rest of the parts from Delrin plastic. The parts are designed with TurboCad 12, I machined the parts with a cnc taig milling machine. Thanks

I bought the boat for $400.00 from a friend and I did not have enough money to buy the ready made rig. I made the sail, mast, and hardware with stuff I had laying around with the exception of the ripstop nylon that I bought on ebay for about $10.00.

Really clever work Tom, and very well executed.

The Amas are great, but I know you would sail faster and higher with the small "optional" Hobie sail on the boat. You can often find these on craigslist, quite cheap. You can sometimes borrow one from a dealer, to try.

If your goal is to keep up with that yellow AI, then you're going to need a little more horsepower.

You've done an impressive job though!

Thanks for the compliments. I use this kayak for fishing, I wanted the sail high above the cockpit to be out of the way while fishing. The rig performs well enough to get me to my fishing spots and back at a nice relaxing pace. My wife bought me the yellow AL for my 50th a year after I finished this project. My son and I take both of them out and you would be surprised by how well this one does against the AL. I hope to get some video of both kayaks this summer.

I love to troll with the AI and TI. Hard for me to slow down enough to run most lures and bait rigs though.

Sailing's too much fun. Sometimes I don't even stop for the fish! :D

Your story and DIY project are great!
