Inquired on a Hobie Cat, unkown year, condition, history, etc.
Was told it was original owner, was sailed until mid 92ish, then had sat until now.
Main sail, boom, and jib all stored in doors.
Owner was getting rid of it because all it did was sit in his grandmothers yard.

Fast forward one month of back and forth texting

4 hour drive one way. settled on $500 dollars. Everything there, needs new lines and new shrouds.
Trailer lights don't work so I bought a set of magnetic trailer lights at local Tractor Supply store.
Got home with no issues

Set up Hobie for the first time in a decade!!! Everything went together smoothly for the first time. Learned how to step the mast.

Since getting the Hobie home I went to the local Hobie dealer and bought new lines for the tramp. I also purchased new shrouds (shorter).
From 6/12-6/14/2013 I removed the boat from the trailer and painted the trailer.

Prep work was pressure washing, sanding, pressure washing, sanding, pressure washing, sanding.
3 coats 4-6 hours apart.

Began wet sanding of starboard hull. Started with 400 grit.
Here is a shot of both hulls to see before/ after:

Also put the boat back on the trailer to do this.
I will work my way through 600 then 800 then 1000 (maybe 1200) then put a polish on

Thanks! When I first got the pictures I thought it was white hulls and a black tramp. Hopefully once I finish the sanding and polish the blue will come out well.
This is only my second sailboat and my first Hobie. I hope i can get this one on the water by the end of the month

If you are going to wet sand, i just finished sanding my boat that was the same blue as yours and it turned out brilliantly. I would start with 400 though (i used 400 with no visible scratches) that oxidation looks really bad. what do you plan on doing after you wet sand it?

I started with the 400. I used 600 earlier this evening. I will use the 800 then 1000 tomorrow (maybe 1200). What should be my next step? From what I've read on here I think Ill put on a polish like the 3m finesse it. Any recommendations?

Yep, that boat looks amazing given where it started. Time to stop sanding and go sailing!!!! That's a winter project :D

I used 3m finesse it machine polish (I needed 2 16 oz containers FYI) with a high speed polisher from harbor freight ($40). I don't know if you have done any more 400 sanding since the picture, but it looks like there still is some unfinished areas. It looks like there is some gray haze left on the hull that will look much worse as you continue sanding. Also when its time to sand/polish the inside of the hulls, its much easier if you put the mast up and flip it on its side rather than crawl under it.

Thanks for the advice with the insides... in that picture only the starboard hull was done with 400. The port hull hadn't been touched yet. I also went over both hulls again twice. Right now both hulls have been sanded with 600. Ill update with new photos soon

That's a great looking boat. Wow, I wish my '73 16 was in good shape when I got it. I'm curious why it needed new shrouds? Seems like steel wire should be pretty stable material. Mine had had a new tramp, main sheet and blocks, trailer, and now a new set of sails. It seems to work pretty well but I'm certain it could use a comp tip mast and a new jib sheet one of these days. The shrouds and stay seem in good enough shape however.

Strangely when I got the trailer for the boat it came with a 14T.

hogwldfltr, when I got the boat, the shrouds were kinked a couple of places so I didn't want to chance 35+ year old shrouds. Also, the new shrouds are the shorter shrouds, so apparently it increases the mast rake. I kept the old shrouds for emergency repairs, but would only want to use them if completely necessary. Sorry for the length between posts, I'm currently in college so ill try to check in more often.

I know this is a very old thread!

KMAN .... did you continue documenting your project in a blog somewhere perhaps?
