I picked up my preowned Getaway Friday night and finally was able to sail it on Sunday. What a rush! I was doing at least 10 knots, and I think almost flew a hull a couple of times. The jib makes a big difference. I always meant to get the jib kit for my Wave, but never did. Anyway, I've got a good grasp of the basics. I got hit by some 20 knot gusts and managed to avoid righting practice (the lake is still a little chilly). My date loved the simplicity of it rigging and it's responsiveness to slight adjustments with the hotstick. One of the big selling points was the traveler (my sloop doesn't have one). I noticed that it is controlled by the bitter end of the main sheet in a cam cleat that allows it to be let out only, not brought to weather. I thought that bringing the traveler to weather would make it point better. Is that correct? is there some kind of traveler limiter (i.e. car) I can install to push it up past the centerline? Do people install some kind of cleating system to pull it to me?

If the sail cam past mid point it would act as an anchor. Just center it up and run with it! As the wind picks up travel out a few inches to De power, which will help keep the boat level and fast!

For a clear, detailed explanation of why you don't want your traveler to pull your sail to windward (what would be called a "hooked leech"), check out this excellent web site:

http://www.sailtheory.com (specifically the "tuning" page)

Cheers,

Steve
