I'm having the weirdest issue with the mast fitting into the mast receiver. It is a 2007 mast/receiver - the "outty" is on the mast.
the little mast keeper dealio (that you pull to release the mast), suddenly won't fit over the little lip on the mast. It is like the mast is 1/8" too high in the receiver.

I checked to see if the receiver had any junk in it, that was preventing the mast from seating, but nope.

Any thoughts?

Your mast spool may have moved slightly up the mast. If so, time for epoxy.

Adjustments of the V frame inside the hull can align the latch for that vintage... assuming the drum did not shift.

Thanks Matt and Bob,

So how would I tell if the mast shifted? And I am assuming adjust the vbaraces out- make them longer?

It is a 2012 hull ( warranty) with the old mast...

Look at the mast below the spool to see if it has risen up (discolored, epoxy left behind) and above the spool (gap with no epoxy). Also check the turnbuckles from the front hatch to see if anything is loose. One or the other should show a change.

What is the distance from the bottom of the Mast to the drum/spool supposed to be on these... Mine looks like someone has epoxied it... but........

My 2007 had the same issue when I bought it... I just fixed it by re-doing some repairs where the Base cup had broke the nubs at the bottom of the hull... So I did some shimming and ect. down there...

In order to get the mast to "lock in" I had to adjust the V frame out pretty far to make it work...

Then of course I thought it looked like the mast was raked to far aft.... Until I figured out the upper part of the frame containing the bearing had been bent downward... It was very easy to bend back into place... Allowing me to relieve some of the pressure from the V frame... But it still seems like I had to crank on the V frame to make it work right...

Any pictures with some numbers for what this stuff is supposed to measure???

Measured off a replacement part here...

Pin-end to bottom of the drum 11"

Pin-end to catch 9 1/4"

Steve and Ron, the only caution I would give when expanding the turnbuckles is to avoid excessive pushing of the vbrace on the hull bottom. If you are creating a distinct bulge there, you may be taking the wrong approach. 1/8" is not a radical adjustment though.

A slipping, or misglued furling ring could be the real culprit. In which case it will get worse, or fail over time.

Coach, is there a chance the metal retainer clip is just bent?

Ron, In my experience the bearing plate does not sit parallel to the hull. It has a forward/downward angle on most of the boats I have seen.

Yep... I was quite worried about this myself.... As I am near the end of the adustment on the turnbuckles... Although at this point it isn't causing a ton of pressure nor deflection.

This because it is easily bent like that or because ????

This is what I started with...

The drum is very securely epoxied into this position by previous owner.

Repairs done here due to "dismasting" Not sure how the hell it happened... but...

At first glance I thought maybe the mess inside the hull was causing the mast to rake aft... Closer inspection shows the bearing plate is bent down... Not saying the mast might have some aft rake it shouldn't... but the plate is clearly bent..

I had put a pretty significant amount of pressure in the turnbuckles to get the mast to lock in in these pictures... After massaging some things it now requires much less pressure...

I will check the location of the drum shortly...

It is bent over a little too much and the furling spool looks all wrong. It has slipped before and may be misplaced due to this. Also too much wear on the bearing contact points.

Looks line the mast went for a walk at one time due to the furling drum slipping and there was a partial collapse. Things are torqued. I would guess tha on a TI, the bar would have snapped. Your stuff just bent.

The modified bolt at the base of turnbuckles should have no effect on things.

The turnbuckles should never be maxed out.

I think the problem with mine is that it wasn't latching in... but they kept sailing it anyway. There are no noticeable grooves or anything worn in the drum.. As in it looks worse than it is... that ugly plastic welding job on the bottom of the kayak though.... It doesn't leak.. so it is a winter project...

I have no idea how they busted the nub for the mast cup... but whatever...

My mast does measure 9 inches from bottom of catch to the end of the pin... and 11 inches from the bottom of drum to the end of pin...

This is what I have now after tweaking things...

Well i finally got under the hood to check it out (no weight bearing right ankle is a PITA!)
I found that the mast receiver has a crack right along the "front side" - the side facing the nub where the V-braces are. It doesn't go all the way around the mast receiver, nor does it split the V-brace nub off.

I am assuming that is enough to shift the receiver down slightly, but wanted to hear two things from the experts:
1) seems like i need a new mast receiver?
2) is that the likely cause of my woes?
