No your base is supposed to be rivited to the mast. Also your missing the step link to help you raise the mast. http://static.hobiecat.com/digital_assets/21380001.pdf

Cool

1) Where can i get the step link? BTW I'm in Australia, which basically means shipping it from overseas is usualy cheaper they buying it localy
2) I should get it re-riveted? The rivets in the mast are still in place and the holes in this bit don't look warn or broken, It's seems as if the previous owner sailed the boat like this

1. any hobie dealer should have em.
2. the holes in your base are blown out. You will need to re-drill your mast and base for new rivets.

Right, drill new holes and use some stainless rivets. It's not particularly hard.the part you are looking for is frequently called a mast hinge.

Is drilling and tapping a bad idea?

Should be okay. Little stress here as mast loading is mostly vertical. A couple panhead 10-32s should work well. I'd use some kind of thread locker. I'm guessing the mast vibrates a lot.

Why not just rivet it?

I agree; it's better to not reinvent the catamaran.

Rivet guns are cheap and riveting is easier, really.

Ill get practicing,
What size rivets should I use?
Should I just use 2?
Where should I put the new rivets, slightly lower and infront or behind the current ones?

$30 for the mast step link, much cheaper then I expected

Probably 3/16 x 1/2" stainless steel. Look at the bottom of your mast and locate two rivets, one on each side, where the aluminum is thickest. Years of salt water corrosion here can make the metal pretty weak. You want to be at least 1/4" from the broken holes in the base.
