I'm headed to Florida tomorrow, and considering installing my Mirage drives in my PA 12 and Outback, bungied in up position for interstate travel, to save room in SUV. Anything wrong with that idea?

If you have them installed and held flush against the hull using the retainer cords that hook to one of the pedals, I would think you would be fine. Not sure how you unload them, but as long as you know they are installed and you're careful, you should be good to go. I normally install my Mirage drive after I am in deep enough water to do so.

This is just for the drive down. Once we get to the house I am renting and unload my stuff, I will take them out and put in the back of the SUV before we go fishing. We are carrying my son's dog in a pet crate and we are pushed for room in the back.

It all depends in how your kayak is loaded and how exposed your mirage flippers are exposed to the wind. At 60 + mph you can generate a lot of pressure against the flippers. If the flippers are secured so they don't flap around in the wind you shouldn't have a problem. I would't want my flippers flapping around in the wind on a long trip like that.

Why not just store the drives inside the hulls? I would be happier with them out of the wind.

I would not feel comfortable having a 500.00 Mirage drive unit mounted on my PA for a long highway trip. I would find room in the vehicle or put them inside the yak hull at the very least and wrap them in a towel or blanket so they won't rub on the hull.

....and for those quick stops along the way; out of sight-out of mind. I would feel better with the drives hidden in the hull, while I'm sitting in Cracker Barrel or Waffle House.
Also, boats would be cable locked to the rack or trailer for the same reason.....14 years as a LEO, I kind of think the worst of everybody.
