My 17 did a flying leap with it's rack this morning in a 50 mph gust. I lost a rudder and the mast top...looking for replacements.

Of course... your dealer would have access to these parts for you.

I am in Michigan. Just the carbon mast tip is broken. Is it a relatively straight forward process to replace it? are special tools required?

The tip is fiberglass, not carbon.
Yes - remove the old bits, glue in the new. No special tools required.

Where in Michigan?

The tools required depends on the age of the mast. The older masts have a single bolt holding the mast tang and comptip on. The only tools required would be a drill to put a new hole in the comptip and some wrenches to remove/install the bolt.

The later masts have a riveted tang. You will need a drill and a powerful rivet gun to install the stainless rivets required to put the mast tang back on.

I am in Novi MI.

Sounds pretty straight forward. Hoping a used one is more in my budget. Looks like a new tip is about $800.

Let me know what you find. Just realized today that my comptip is also cracked & in need of replacement.

(Pic below... ugly even ignoring the stained used-to-be-white "Formula" edition mast. Cracks are only 2.5 feet from the top though, so maybe possible to repair since not much lateral bending there?)

That looks repairable to be. I did find a blog where someone described a mast repair. Still looking for a new stick or a tip for mine.

I found a mast tip..does anyone know what kind of glue is used to hold it in? What the size of the stainless rivets is? Is there a technical bulletin or instruction from Hobie on how to install the tip?

Hobie does have instructions for installing the comptip, I would search the "Support" section on their site.

The rivets would be 3/16" diameter stainless steel, about 1" long. I would use West system six10 epoxy when seating the mast - that stuff is very easy to work with. Do a dry run before applying the epoxy as the comptip ferrule may need to be ground down slightly to fit into the lower mast extrusion.
