What's your favorite tiller extension - and where do I get one?

The one that came with my boat is to short to get out on the trapeze...

regards - Andy

You can make a carbon fiber one. Matt Bounds was talking about it a few weeks ago. Buy 3 lengths, cut one in half. Attach a long piece and a short piece together with a fitting, and you have two tillers.

I thought that thread was for a Hobie 16?

It's only different lengths right?

My plan is to buy some bamboo. Light, strong, cheap.

I would make certain you like sailing with a fixed length extension before shelling out the money for one on a boat with wings. That is a lot of tiller to deal with when you're not out on the wire and it will get pretty pricy to build one for a H21. My preference is an adjustable tiller (Hotstick). I don't like dealing with all that extra tiller sticking out behind me. In fact, I pretty much constantly adjust the length while sailing so the end of the extension is right in my hand.

I like the adjustable LONG Hotstick too. A long one is great when you are on the wire, but aggravating trying to sail in light air up near the front crossbar.

I bought my long hot stick in '89 and it is as good as new today....IMO that is the way to go!

Count me in the long hotstick camp as well. Like srm, I am constantly adjusting the length on the 21. Set the length for trapping and if you are sitting on the wing it will foul in the trap wires, sit on the deck and it is banging on the wing.
Really worth the money to adjust!

The jumbo length hotstick is the only way to go I keep the original fiberglass around for a frog gig
Keep the new hotstick out of the sun as much as possible
Find some chair leg tips at Lowes for end replacements
This should be a life of the boat item

Thanks for all the advise! I went with the Hobie Hotstick - the long one... Great adjustable tiller with plenty of length to get out on the trap! w/the cork ball and long neoprene sleeve! Love it! I think Strictly Sail bought up all the remaining stock. Apparently they are not being made anymore.

Cheers - Andy
