On my PA-14 there are 2 machine screws 1" on center apart...I assume this is the area your failure occurred....yes?

Thanks Tws......I think adding a couple of fender washers under the head of the machine screws would be a good long term solution for all of us PA owners.....even more important if you have the larger rudder installed as I have.
It's really unfortunate you had a failure.....but repairing/patching that spot/hole seems to be not too difficult as the surface is nice and flat.

To clarify this happens when the rudder is left in the stored, or UP, position for extended periods of time?

When storing it it should be left DOWN?

Yes, I stored my rudder in the up positon while stored.

If you store it in the down postion there will be less pressure on the system. So yES...

In the summer I store my 14' PA on top of a Coleman tent trailer, it is resting on two 4" black ABS pipes. There is not enough clearance between the top of the tent trailer and PA to fully release the rudder. My question is should I release the rudder and let it hang as far as it can to relieve the pressure on the rudder line system? I have stored the rudder up on my PA with no problems for 5 years now.

This is a tension issue. You can raise the rudder, but if you back it off just a little, you will reduce the line tension.

I wanted to update everyone who own a PA 14 about a problem I experienced. The Rudder cord pulled a ripped hole in the hull where the pulley is located in the hull. I did not know that the rudder should not be left in the up position when stored. So having a large hole in the hull was not good if I turned over. Contacted ACK in Austin to see what my choice would be to the repair. ACK contacted HObie and it was determined that the "Hole above the water line would not be a warranty replacement issue, but i would get to have the repair made to the yak at the expense of Hobie. I contacted ACK in Austin and asked them if they would repair my yak. They agreed to look at the yak and see what it would take to repair but they would not allow a reservations for the repair. First come first serve. And they would be open at 10 AM.

When I got to ACK I was met with customer service at it's best. Everyone was very friendly and responsive to my need for a solution to repair my YaK...

I would like to tell everyone that Justin, Austin Store Manager, was a professional at the highest level I could have every expected. He talked me through the process, answered my 100 plus questions, and made sure I did not have any more questions.

Thanks Justin, you did GOOD.

Remember everyone who won a Hobie PA 14, be careful with how you store your yak with the rudder pulled up.

Thanks to Matt at HObie for responding to my request for a solution to repairing my yak.
