Fleet 32’s distance races on Labor Day weekend have been added to the Division 9 Championship Points Series! The dates are August 30-31 in Virginia Beach. The race will start at Albemarle Street off Shore Drive in Virginia Beach near the Lesnar Bridge with a LeMans type start. The route will take the fleet out through islands 1-2 of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel then back through islands 3-4. It’ll cover approximately 20 miles. The next day, we’ll reverse course and race through islands 3-4 first then come back through islands 1-2, depending on wind direction. Fleet 32 scores each day as a separate event: Saturday is the Version 2.13, Sunday is the Chesapeake Challenge. For Division 9 points purposes, we’ll count each day’s race as part of a two-race regatta.

The distance race format is a blast. If you’ve done one of these before, you know what I’m talking about. If you haven’t, you’ve got to come give this a try. Since the regatta is open to all makes of catamarans, we won't count this one as an HCANA Points Regatta, however, it will count towards our own Division 9 Championship Points Series for class legal Hobie 16s. This regatta will be a lot of fun.

For details, contact the Fleet 32 Commodore, Carter Paradis, at [email protected]

We are just over a week away from Hobie Fleet 32's Version 2.13 distance races in Virginia Beach over the weekend of August 30-31. The races will kick off with LeMans starts from the beach near Albemarle Street at 11:00 on Saturday and Sunday. The course will take the fleet on a 19-mile course out through the "islands" in the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel and back to the beach. A NOR and Sailing Instructions can be found at the Fleet 32 site, http://hobiefleet32.com/UPCOMING_EVENTS.html.

The fleet will be divided into low and high Portsmouth fleets and a Weta fleet. If five class legal Hobie 16's or 18's show up, they will be scored as a one-design fleet within the fleet and the results will be included in the Division 9 Championship Points Series, however, results will not be scored as an HCANA points regatta.

After the first two races of the points series, Rick Harper is out in front. Will someone in Virginia Beach be able to cut into his lead? Can Rick pull farther ahead? The fourth and final race for the Division 9 Championship will be the Indian Summer Regatta on October 10-11 at Lake Waccamaw, NC.

Come out and support Fleet 32 as they continue to sponsor cat racing!

Mark Van Doren
HCANA Division 9 Chairman
