I have a 2004 Getaway I just purchased used and it has ugly rust stains down the side of the hulls from the chainplates and the bow crossbar screws. I'm unsure how I should go about removing them. I'm concerned that the cleaners for rust stains will damage the hulls. Anyone else had to address this issue?

Thanks,

Barry Martin

Try some FSR. You should be able to find it in your local marine store.

I actually use more FSR in my wash to keep the iron in well water from turning all white shirts to rust.

I've never used it on my Hobie but I believe that hull can handle many chemicals as long as it is a limited exposure. (spray/scrub/rinse)

Thanks for the insight. I'll see about getting some the next time I'm in Virginia Beach.

This is my first venture into boating with the plastic hulls. I've had 2 Prindle 16 cats since 1989. I rented a Getaway and was amazed at how easy it was to handle and how comfortable the boat was compared to my boat. Anyone want to buy a Prindle 16??

This fall turned out to be the perfect time and opportunity to get the Getaway. I just turned 29 for the second time and we have a young grandson that I want to introduce to sailing next year. He'll be 2 1/2 then and this boat seems to be a better platform than the Prindle. (His mom is very protective) Barring an accident on or off the water this boat should outlast my sailing days.

Matt,

Thanks for your information. I've seen Magica at local hardware stores. I'll get some tomorrow and give it a try. Your description of metalurgy pertaining to stainless steel was on the mark. What alloy is used on the ss parts used on Hobie products?

Magica is indeed magic. I started using it when I notice some small rust stains from the chain plates. I tried scrubbing but couldn't get them off, then discovered Magica through this board, and the rust stains are gone!

That is why we call it stain-less... not stain-free :)

I think the grade of stainless varies. We have and have had a lot of vendors over the years.

Don't worry. I'm not dissing the quality of the hardware. Even the best stainless will oxidize if the conditions are right.

There are indeed different grades and quality of SS and I trust that your quality assurance dept keeps an eye on this. I don't consider the rust stains on my Getaway to be a problem, just an aesthetic issue.

Does anyone know if this product is sold by any retail chains? I've checked several local places without luck.

Thanks,

Barry Martin

I bought mine directly from the manufacturer at http://www.magicarustremover.com/ I've seen it at many other online sites, but not in any "brick & mortar" stores.

West Marine used to carry it, but apparently no longer does. Some of the other boating supplies chains may carry it.

Before you buy some high dollar stuff. Try some Bob Ami at $1 a can at the grocery store. Make a paste and let set for 15-20 minutes on the stain. It go most of the stains and green slime off my Hobie 17 that had been setting outside untouched for 4 years.
