So my brother (the infamous Captain Noah) and I have an H20 and a little sister. And we are wondering if in stronger wind we ought to bring her onboard to keep the boat down, as the two of us have to sheet out if we want to avoid capsizing. The issue is though, will we get more speed by sheeting out or by having the extra weight and keeping the sheets in?

Travel out, sheet in, yank the downhaul and go as (censored) fast as you can! Leave the girl on the beach, she'll get hurt on the 20 in big wind.

In de-powering the 20 we've been taught this progression, we're a light team and have used it a bunch to "calm the monster".

After double trap and max downhaul, then derotate the mast, then travel out the main.

It's a fun with boat with two on the trapeze and one driving, but I'll agree with Chris. When adding weight the boat will ride lower in the water and you'll being going so damn fast when you slam a wave with the front beam someone's going flying.

You guys be nice to your sister

If you are still overpowered after dropping the traveler a few inches, consider pulling you daggers up about 4 inches. It will make a noticeable effect in helping to keep the boat down. Your upwind sailing ability will hardly suffer, if at all.

thanks for the input. how does the daggerboard trick work? and on that note, as anyone rigged a positive support system for the daggerboards to hold them up part way? i've seen this on a few other cats in our club, and have thought about installing something on our 20. i mean, whats a few more lines, anyway?

Trick?

They (the boards) create lift, reduce that total area underwater by, as Trey suggests, pulling them up a bit will depower and settle the lifting hull.

We like the carpet in our trunks as the only means to support the boards. Is kind of a (censored) some times (hard to pull up) but have no added clutter.

I need to find ways to power my girl UP more. Its gotta really be blowing for me to be too overpowered, and usually the after the down haul is exahusted, I travel out a bit and I am good, but its in the moderate air I want to get her up and can't. I would think it was our weight, but 325 on a 20 is not too much. I can't figure it out. We usually have all the boat speed we need too going up wind. There are a million tweaks on this boat that is for sure.

You probably don't want to hear what I have to stay, but first off 325?

Paul and I weigh between 305 & 315 depending on what he's spending money on (college kids!) You sure that 325 is right? You and Reagan?

In light air crew weight makes no difference. In heavy air you have the advantage. In moderate air I think a lighter team definitely has an advantage on this boat.

Match/set your main sail luff curve to the mast (prebend & spreader rake) and then leave it alone. Use outhaul to create more draft and power in your sail.

With the old cut, fuller E-P main our mast looks like a banana. With you're newer flatter cut sail I'd expect your mast to look more normal, without a tremendous amount of bend or rake.

Me and Jordon. Reagan has a girlfriend now, and races 16 with her.
Thanks for the help. I look forward to pummeling you repeatedly on the water in the spring.

Want to escape from the doldrums fo the high prairie in the dead of winter?

Mid-Winters East
St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club
Panama City, Florida
March 9th, 10th, and 11th, 2007

You've gone down for "schooling" before, haven't you? I think there is just a few 20's down there so we should be able to meld in and not look like total incompetents :o

Four certain and four maybe Div 14 boats.

Get some Div 7 boats and let's do it :)

You NEED to travel to three corners of the US in 2007.

OK, I know we've completely destroyed this thread with personal chit-chat (SORRY) but I think we need to mention one other depowering item.

pasdnous,

Does your 20 have a seven hole adjuster at the top of the forestay?

This allows more mast rake than the stock setup which also settles the boat quite a bit.

cw, When is TW getting a 20?
