Hi everyone.

First post on the forum. After decades of wanting one I'm finally shopping for a Hobie. I'll be sailing solo mostly, hence my interest in the 17. But I would like to be able to go with someone as well, both being able to go out on the wire.

So the question:

Is there some reason a second trapeze can't be added to a 17, as long as the total weight doesn't exceed the wing limit?

I'm trying to decide between a 16 and a 17.

Thanks for the input.

Short story - no double trap due to structural issues.

Long story - the 17 was designed as a singlehanded boat. Hobie Cat introduced the 17 Sport (added jib, bow spreader, subtracted boom, simplified sail controls) to broaden the appeal (translation - sell more boats) of the platform. The 17 Sport pushes the design to the limit. The 17 was never designed for two people on the trapeze, and doing so would overstress key components like crossbeam / hull connections and the bows.

For two people, you're better off with a 16, maybe an 18 depending on your combined weight.
