Bed Extender

Hi. I am new to the forum. Just waiting for my 2016 PA14 to arrive. I will be hauling it in my pick-up. It has a 6 foot bed. Which bed extenders work well for people? What mods have people made to improve them? Thanks

If you're not fishing in a salt environment, the Harbor Freight Bed Extender is a good economical choice. If you do fish saltwater, then you have to consider the "rust" factor. When I'm not trailering both PAs, I use one of the Boondox T-Bone bed extenders. Since it is aluminum I don't have to worry about the rust. Tight lines...

I went with the Lund Bed Extender. a little more expensive than the one that mouse posted up but very similar so i just speak of what i know of the one i have. I added two small 12" pieces of 3" PVC just to act as a roller or at least something that didnt have a sharp corner. I get to the launch and take em apart and throw it in the Rambox or in the back seat area of the truck and very fast to do. I am in saltwater so will need to re-paint them after a bit but it makes things super easy. I have my rolling PA Cart that lines up with the extender/bed of the truck and i can run the support pvc right into the extender without worrying about hitting my truck. The boonedox ones look nice and im sure the others do well so if you dont plan on trailering it, definitely pick up some sort of extender. Go Easy and enjoy!

Thanks Mouse and BK. Both are great suggestions. I will check out the Lund, I wasn't aware of that one. The mods sound perfect. I want a trailer, but it's lower on the list. So many things to buy first. Can't wait to pick up my boat. Still have a couple of weeks before it arrives....

A bed extender is a great investment as it allows for a more secure means of transport. When I only need to carry one, I definitely use the bed extender. Better fuel economy versus the trailer and easier on rough dirt roads to the coast.

Here/s an inexpensive bed extender from Harbor Freight. The only problem is, like most bed extenders, it has a squared off bottom which tends to drag across ravines, etc. We solved this problem by cutting and re-angling the bottom as shown here. There are a couple of brands that you can buy already built that way. It's an important consideration unless you have a raised truck (or lots of clearance). If you get one like that, avoid one that lacks an adjustable height though -- that's an important consideration.


Most bed extenders can also be flipped to support overhead lifts like this:


The PA 14 will fit a 6 foot bed with or without a bed extender, but the extender is a more secure way to transport. Here's what it looks like both ways:

Thanks, RoadRunner! The pictures tell a good story. And the angle would be a key consideration too. I was wondering about some of the models I saw that didn't have an angle.
