I have a 2012 Tandem Island, love it, but. At the end of the 2014 season my mast snapped at the base in about 15 to 20 MPH winds, on a down wind reach. I have been in much stronger winds with no problem. Hobie replaced it under warranty and I was happy and good to go. Now appx. 1 year later it broke again, in roughly the same wind and sail setup, keep in mind I am sailing in Wisconsin so I only get 5 to 6 months of sailing time, so not as much use as warmer climates.

What is going on and do other people have this same issue? I want to trade in my single Adventure Island for another new Tandem, but not if I'm going to be replacing the mast every year.

Somebody help

Hajime had a video showing the same incident where mast broke at the base. Search his YouTube videos.

I've had mine out a few times when the mast was bent way over, but never broke. I must say I was very concerned but all worked well. Good to know Hobie replaced it under warranty.

Yes, my TI mast has broken too, also on a broad (downwind) reach.

Mine broke where the rivet on the downhaul moulding contacted the mast. The other rivet has worn a groove in the mast.
Where exactly did your mast break?
