I recorded 15.8 on a stock Wave this past summer and I was backing off a little early. I was blowing the sheet when there was about 1/2 inch of bow above the water. Wind was quite variable as it is a lake in VT. However at 1800 feet above sea level we do get good breeze a lot. Top winds were probably 22-25 in very quick gusts. On the same lake I have done over 25 on my sailboard. Great part is there is a 5 mph speed limit for power boaters! I have a Garmin GPS that is meant for a car but I put it in a water tight bag. There is a function for saving the highest speed so I don't have to actually see it while sailing. I usually look at it when I get to the far side of the lake.

I recorded 16.4 mph on my stock Wave.

Great video! This is really fast for Wave.

I know some guys regularly do over 20 knots on H16 in Western Australia. They allow them to race moths and kites in the same regatta.

I hope to break my 16.4 mph Wave speed sometime soon.

This summer i managed to finally get a Hobie 16 over 25 knots (25.64 knots = 29.5 mph)
It was the maximum speed recorded on a GPS.

Does anyone know of anyone going faster?

Luckily i had a camera on at the time - here you go:

Joe,

That was an awesome video, you two were definitely delivering the mail. Nice save at the end of the video.

I hope some day to go to Vassiliki Bay and enjoy the thrill also.

How difficult is it to get to Wildwind from the US?

My GPS smart watch hit a max of 20.6mph on my T2. Not sure how accurate that is since it was just for an instant in a gust. However, the same day I had nice consistant stretches of 18 and 19mph that I'm sure were accurate. This was crew on trap, skipper fully hiked, and on the edge of/occasionally barely flying a hull.

- It's a five hour drive from Athens - there are busses that are quite regular or a hire car is a much more agreeable method.

GREAT THREAD !!

I have a Hobie 21se ; was wondering what she would do, (Flat-Out). Looks like with the
regular 25 to 30kt wind i get at Lake Mohave, and and the Virgin river basin of Lake Mead
i can count on something in the 20kt + range for my cat !!!

I fish and camp a lot, so i got a 15-Hp 4-stroke to get through the 10 miles of narrows
at lake mead, to reach the East side ; i may trade that motor in in a 20Hp 4-stroke, after
reading this Thread, because the hull speed of the 21se is higher than i thought .

Also looks like i'm gonna be getting a reefable Main for my 21se ; learned my lesson
on Lake Mohave with a Hobie 20 i was partners with, when we blew out the main
in a 35-Kt wind one day, (it was reefed in to about a Hobie 16 size) but the sail
was old and tired !! We sailed her back with the jib ; lucky we practiced jib only
sailing in high wind already. :(

At the Sausalito Regatta here in Div three we had a wild weekend. I was on my buddies H21SE and our GPS recorded a top speed of 32.2 MPH, winds were gusting to 38MPH.

That is insane speeds. Love it. what sails did you have up?
we went sailing round the estuary in a strong Force 5 gusting 6.
Approximately 28knots true around the bay straight across the marshes came the 29-33knot gusts.
Our 21se reached 20.6mph on Garmin gps triple trapeze and me driving. On a fetch. Clocked up 38.8 miles in 2 hours.

Interesting posts but a serious comment...

To me, instantaneous speeds calculated using GPS are pretty noisy and I regard some speed spikes registered by my various GPS devices as clearly not possible.

I agree, but --spesce-- used Two GPS units ; both tracked speeds of 23-mph
so
i can safely assume that my Hobie 21se is probably good for 20mph + .

Yep, two GPS devices contemporaneously recording the same speed is good enough for me.

I just bought a Hobie 21 SE with modern sails (square top mainsail) and a spinnaker. According to the previous owner they once sailed 33 kn with 6 people on board using all the sails. Equally impressive is that during a day of sailing he and a friend sailed 270 km i 10 hours. That is 14.6 kn (16.8 mph) average over 10 hours!

On my last sailing day last season I recorded 20.9MPH solo on my 16. I was not trapped out but I WAS wide awake!

I hope to match or beat that this season. I also had great days when I was barely moving so I guess for me it's as much about just sailing as the speed

If you're heading out with a GPS you can get your results on the Joyrider TV Global Speed Stick - here's what you need:

If you’d like to get involved, send your top speed to:
[email protected]

INCLUDE:
name of helm and crew
type of boat
location
evidence (please try to include the date)

good luck

to see what's there already:
