Depends on what you plan on doing with it. If you're just going to recreationally sail, to me it looks fine. Always worth offering a couple hundred less than they're asking.

If you're wanting to get into serious racing, I'd buy a more recent boat.

Be sure to ask about the rigging such as the shrouds and the trap wires. Since he has it in a disassembled state, watch out for missing parts.

It's garage kept which is good. If it's a freshwater boat, I'd say it's appropriately priced, assuming no missing parts.

If it doesn't come with beach wheels or a gear box on the trailer, watch out. New beach wheels cost $500, so another point to ask for a little less money on the price.

If the sails are reasonably nice, then it's not far off a very good price.

This seems like a fair price...

if the hulls are hard...

And sails in good shape...

i paid 4,000 CDN for a similar boat 3 years ago and glad i did... there is a lot of junk around for 1500 -2,000...

Good Luck...

Personally, I'd go $2800 and see if it sticks. It is the modern setup but still 21+ years old. The sails are probably well used and that's a HUGE factor. I picked up a 1996 Hobie 20 on a trailer-ex aluminum trailer for $2500 but the 16's hold value a lot higher. Current racing class. Those hulls look really nice. I'm sure its worth $3k in great condition but I've also seen 2004's go for $3500 locally. Tough call.

Only you can answer that question. It depends on the condition of the boat, what else is available in your area, and how badly you want it.

Hobie's catamaran production dropped off significantly in the 1990's and beyond. Not saying there aren't used boats around, but in my area listings in craigslist are filled with boats from the '70s and '80s. Rarely do I see many boats from the '90s and later.

A 1996 Hobie 16 would have most of the features of a current boat, and those that it doesn't have could be easily upgraded if desired. This boat looks like it was garage kept and is in good shape. If the sails are in good shape and the majority of the boat is in good condition, I would think the $3200 asking price is reasonable. Also, those Performance trailers are top knotch IMO. They have a nice sturdy frame and fully boxed cross members, very solid.
