Hello,

I am looking to add a Jennaker to my Hobie 21SC for downwind sailing, it looks like it is rigged similar to the Jib:

bridles attached to tangs forward of jib tangs.
furler
forestay attached to tang on mast above jib tang
swivel
halyard within zipper luff
continuous sheet lead to blocks on rear cross beam held up by bungees.

I have all the rigging materials, just need the sail.

I have done both bolt rope and zipper luff replacements on sails (walking foot).

Does anyone have the dimensions, and material weight. I would like to try and re-cut a used sail, and add a zipper luff.

Any tips/suggestions would be appreciated, or if anyone has a used Jennaker for sail, it may save me the time and trouble.

Thanks,

Mike

I have one that I haven't had a chance to use yet. I'm pretty sure it is made of dacron material. The material feels and looks very much like the dacron main and jib, just a little lighter weight. I can't swear mine is Hobie stock. The colors match my Hobie sails though.

The dimensions are:
21' - 7" luff - from furler to top swivel
15' - 0" foot - bottom
19' - 5" back side of sail from clew to top (not sure of nautical term)

I've seen quite a few asymmetrical spinnaker go pretty cheap on EPRAY if you have access to a sewing machine to resize it. I'm only guessing it'd work.

Good Luck

I really appreciate the info, and will track down something close to test.

Most of the spinnakers are light weight nylon, don't think that would work too well on the furler. I was looking at getting a light weight Dacron Genoa of a larger boat, and re-cutting. I do have a walking foot sewing machine that I have used to repair sails. so I don't believe it would be that much work.

Just out of curiosity, would you be interested in parting with yours?

Thanks,

Mike

LOL!, NO... I just bought it not long ago myself, and it was just shear luck that I happened to find it. Actually, it was like new. Very little wear. I hope to get it wet soon.

I think Hobie still has these available, if your project doesn't work out. I don't know a lot about sail making, but understand there's an art to it to get it right.

As far as performance, I'm looking forward to using it. It's kind of comparing apples to oranges to compare the SE to the SC, but that's the closest thing I have to measure with. Point being, I know a SE owner that pulled his spin out during a race. He told me a Prindle 18 had been dogging him all day long in heavy winds. They headed down wind for the final leg when his 1st mate threw the spin out. He said it sounded like a bomb going off as the wind filled it. With a geyser of water shooting off the hull and midway up the mast they jetted their way into first place. The Prindle was left far, far in the distance. He also told me when the Prindle skipper finally made it in, he was laughing about how he couldn't see a damn thing of the H21 except a white rooster tail. So the story was told to me...I didn't witness it, but wish I had! Do I expect the same level of performance? No, but I'm sure it'll be fun anyway.

Good luck.

I just sold my Hobie 20 last fall, the wife and kids were getting upset at the limited real estate, as the controls take up most of the tramp. I really enjoyed the responsiveness, and would sail it solo, kind of like a large Hobbie 17...

Looking at the specs weight/sail area the 21SC seems like it needs a bit of wind to get it going. I saw my main adrenaline rush might come from a good downwind sail Jennaker flying.

The family can't complain now with two tramps, 10 ft wings and a built in cooler. There's now even room for the dog (Cruzer).

If I can get a cheap Dacron Sail, it will at least give me a starting point.

Thanks Again,

Mike

Rockets,

By any chance could you take a few photos of the sail, I would like to see how the material is cut/laid out, as well as other details (head, clew, tack, foot, luff, leach).

I am anxious to start on the project before the ice thaws here in New England.

Thanks,

Mike

That should about do it. I'm not sure if the last pic is the same sail maker that Hobie uses or not. BTW, you need to thank the previous owner of this sail for these pics! He sent them to me while I was inquiring about the sail.

One last pic of my SC in the Banana River. Plan to name/decal the boat Banana Wind, when I find the time to work that project...

Great shot of your hobie. Do I see 2 coolers onboard? When you rename it, post a pic and let us know.
