The question has been raised about the Hobie Compass not having carrying handles, which also serve as grips for those times when you just need to hang on. Fortunately this is not difficult to overcome. Back in the early days Hobie didn't use handles on some of the models, so this is what we did: (updated from a 2008 post)
Here's a quick project to help carry the day.
This addition uses Hobie's
Lift Handle (pn # 71190001; about $10.00). The hardware for this installation consists of a couple of 1/4 x 20 x 1" Phillips pan head stainless screws, flat washes and Nyloc nuts:
If you get one, make sure your dealer grabs the handle with the pre-made holes like the one shown, not the
Bravo version without holes!
You can install them on the sides of your boat as a Hail Mary grip....
On the sides as a carrying handle....
Or behind the seat for easy handling. As you can see, it works for tandems as well as singles....
Make sure you (or a long armed friend) can reach this region before you drill! Looks like this:
Once you grasp the versatility of these little handles, it's easy to get carried away and start putting them all over your boat! We already have 4 on the tandem!!
Aside from solving any Compass handle issues, these grips are great for many carrying and loading solutions. They are still in the catalog so I presume Hobie still carries them.
