I am getting conflicting advice as to whether the standard Mirage drive can be converted over to a 180. I've read on the net and various forums that when the 180 first came out Hobie at first offered the parts to do the upgrade. Within a short time, however, they quit doing it and I can't find that they've started again. I called one of the Oregon dealers today and was told they didn't sell any upgrade kits and the only option was to buy a whole new unit for $800+.

I also spoke today with an experienced kayaker who insists that kits can be purchased online from numerous sources (although I can't find them).

So, are kits available or not and from where? Does anyone know?

There will be no "conversion" kit for the old drives to 180.

Your experienced kayaker may be experiencing some confusion. There is an update kit for MD 180 users that updates the masts and fins. This has nothing to do with the Mirage Drive that you have. The MD 180 uses a different spine, fins, sprockets, masts, etc. To upgrade yours, you would probably spend as much in parts as the new Drive. If you want to upgrade, the best deal would be to sell yours and buy a new one -- the net difference would be closer to $400 than $800. 8)
