A groove is not uncommon. The two materials parting line. I would carry spares just in case though. Remember you can pedal on a single fin too.

Thanks for your answer Matt.

"It's not uncommon" : do you mean it's normal :?:
Having seen the OP picture it looks like the metal rods are going to pass thru the groove soon or am I missing something ?

Sure I can order spares but the kit is very expensive (169€) and the kayak has just 4 months :!:
If I have to spend that much each 10 sessions I must say it's a really bad surprise

There is a line between the mast material and the fin material... that is normal. We have seen some form a gap and some tear along the line. We are working on a better bonding set of materials. The mast needs to be tough and the fin needs to be flexible.

I've had the MD-180 since it first came out and have been pretty hard on the Drive. As you can see below, both fins have a pronounced groove and the leading edge has taken several submerged hits without damage.

The fins still perform as when new and obviously they don't get babied! I wouldn't worry about your fins. If you do have a fin failure, the Drive is warrantied for 2 years. IMO, you don't need to carry any spares. The V-1 is not really replaceable in the water. Besides, as Matt says, the boat still goes with only one fin! 8)

Thanks you both!

It's reassuring to know that Hobie is working to fix this issue and that even with an important groove the MD still works as expected.
I will end the season without worrying too much about that.

I bought a new 180 drive which I used for about three months before the seam near the leading edge of the fin separated, revealing the mast. It eventually split from top to bottom, resulting in complete excursion of the mast from the fin pocket.

I'd prefer to send the defective fin directly to Hobie for a replacement. Going through my "local" dealer involves a 1.5 hr drive to Pack and Paddle of Lafayette, La.

May I bypass the middle man and send the failed fin directly to Hobie for a replacement? It would save me time and trouble.

Thanks for any info

Hobie does not do warranty direct and relies on the dealer who sold the item to validate the purchase and submit a claim. You do not have to drive to the dealer and parts can be sent to you directly, so no hassle. Just email photos to the dealer so they can file the claim. Include the desire for a drop ship of the new fin to you, so include your shipping address.

BTW... do you have the V2 fins that attach via a clevis pin and ring?

All you do is send them a picture (the dealer) and they get you replacements - for free - you don't need to travel anywhere - just shoot them an e mail.

We all know it is imports to share and look k for trend lines we can share an expose certain flaws or faults, by please also recognize this is a business they run. Not a charity. Be kind.
