Hi,

Just thought I would show you a gift I received from my good friend Phil Kurg in Oregon. I still can't believe he was nice enough to make this for me. Phil is a gifted electronics engineer that has shared a lot of knowledge with me recently. He designed both the electronic and mechanical items and made this unit in his home workshop. Phil you are the man!

I haven't had the time to actually do a water test on the unit yet, but that should come in the near future and I will share additional photos and possible videos of the unit in action.

I have included some pictures with explanations that will hopefully show you this worthwhile project.

This is the basic unit without the control module or the hand held speed control. Note: The inside of the cassette has been filled with foam at add rigidity. Also, not shown is an aluminum tube that goes from the top to the bottom of the cassette to add additional strength and provide a better bearing surface for the Minn Kota Trolling motor shaft. The donor Minn Kota Trolling Motor was a lost cost 30 lb. thrust 5 speed model. I will be using a 35 AMP HOUR AGM battery for initial testing.

This is the unit installed in my 2018 Hobie Pro Angler 14

This is the bottom view of my kayak with the unit installed. Please note the adjustable depth collar. I still have a few minor clean up details to accomplish i.e. shortening some of the screws and installing nylon inserted lock nuts etc. Just window dressing. Ha Ha

Image

Shown is the water tight variable speed control module. The Yellow/Black Connector goes to the trolling motor cassette unit, the white wire goes to the hand held speed control and the Red/Black connector goes to the 12 volt battery source.

Image

This close up view of the components shows the Black hand held control module. The module provides variable speed control for both the forward and reverse operation of the motor. It also has an off/on toggle switch to turn the motor off. The control pot located on the top of the hand held control has a detent in the center position that turns off the propulsion system. This gives you variable speed in either forward or reverse and a center off position.

This is the Variable Speed Electra Drive Propulsion System components less the battery source.

Image

This is the depth control and steering lock knob. It is used to lock the trolling motor in a fixed position. I have a hand operated steering control lever (not shown) that can be utilized to actually turn the shaft on the trolling motor to give added steering ability. Basic steering control of this unit will be provided by the Hobie Rudder Steering System. Also shown in photo is the handle for easy installing or removing of the unit from the Hobie Kayak.

Image

This shows the Variable Speed Electra Drive Propulsion System Pro Angler 14 system being stored in the front hatch compartment in the Vertical position. It can also be stored in the Horizontal position. The Hobie Mirage Drive can also be stored in this compartment when not in use.

Here is a link to Phil's Flickr account that shows his build process. It has multiple photos and a couple of videos for your viewing pleasure.

Power Pole Connectors Are AWESOME!!!
Powerpole® Stackable Connectors, Anderson Power Products

Here is a link to their website: http://www.andersonpower.com/us/en/products/powerpole/index.aspx

Here is the link to the website (powerwerx) where we purchase the (Powerpole) quality connectors shown in the photos above. i.e. the Yellow/Back and Red/Black ones. If you do much wiring on your Kayak it is well worth the investment. The crimping tool is about $40.00 and the various housings and associated terminals are available in different colors for color coding your connection plugs. The really nice thing about these connectors is that the internal terminal ends come in three different amp ranges 15 amp, 30 amp and 45 amp sizes and they all fit in the same external color coded housings. They make excellent connections and will fit a multitude for wire sizes. You can even connect different size wires together, i.e. a 10 gauge on one side of the plug and a 14 gauge on the other side of the plug. The available wire sizes are listed on the website. It is a GREAT system. Wish I had known about these years ago. https://powerwerx.com/

What everyone should know about trolling motors and AMP DRAW In the video URL link below you will see that the amp draw at 50% i.e. half throttle was 4.5 AMPS which would propel my kayak at approximately 2 mph. The amp draw at 100% i.e. full throttle was 28 AMPS which would propel my kayak at approximately 4 MPH. As you can see, unless you are in a big rush and have plenty of battery reserve you are better off traveling at about half speed of 2MPH. You will increase your range i.e. distance traveled 5 to 7 times with your throttle set to about half speed. Just something that most people don't know. AMP Meters doesn't lie. Ha Ha :)

A wonderful tool at a reasonable price
This meter has a wide range of features, A/C, D/C, OHMS, Continuity, etc. The BIG thing this unit has is the ability to read both A/C and D/C AMPS by just placing the wire that is drawing current inside the clamp on the front of the tool. It is hard to find a reasonably priced meter (this one currently sells for under $40.00) that will read D/C amps. This meter has 3 ranges for D/C AMPS. 2 amps, 20 amps and YES 100 amps.

Thanks again Phil for a wonderful gift.

John

Hi sher715,

You are absolutely correct!!!!

I was fortunate to have meet him on another kayak form. He has also developed some other really cool projects. He has signed up for the Hobie forum and if he posts here you can ask him about them. The have to do with Electric Kayak Propulsion Systems. His latest project is related the the BlueRobotics T200 Thrusters which he uses to power his current kayak. https://www.bluerobotics.com/store/thrusters/t200-thruster/

When I have a question about electronics he is my 'GO TO" man.

John

Hi,

Well it has been quite a while. March 8, 2018

I have had some health issues. Not bad news but GOOD! news. I had my second hip replacement in 2018 and just this week finally returned to my kayaking adventures. The outcome of the surgery was all positive as I had a good doctor.

On March 17, 2020 I met one of my friends at a local lake and finally got back into my Hobie Pro Angler 14 for some kayaking and fishing fun. Phil probably thought I would never try out the wonderful gift that he designed and manufactured for me.

I have listed below a YouTube link that shows pictures and video clips the first voyage of the Hobie Electra Drive. It was a wonderful experience and the unit worked like a charm. :) :) :)

Phil, Many thanks for a wonderful gift. It worked EXCELLENT!!!!! YOU ARE THE MAN ! ! ! Made a nice product even better.

Hope everyone enjoys watching. Don't forget to read the description associated with the YouTube Video.
