I could use some advice on purchasing used HOBIE PA14 that my neighbor is selling.
Salt water use.

1. 2-3 years old, good condition (will know more when they come down to the beach next week)
2. What is a good purchase price (deal for me) for this salt water used craft?
3. What should I inspect or look for specifically when I get a chance to check-out the kayaks next week.?

I am going to my local Hobie dealer today to establish a relationship and ask about kayak lessons.

Thanks

May want to ask the dealer if they would do an inspection.

Fading, loose or binding controls/ drive. Corrosion, cracks. Excessive wear at the keel surfaces. Inspect the scuppers closely for cracks inside and at the edges. Frayed lines. Value really changes from year to year based upon features which change often. Also the extras that come with the kayak. Figure roughly 2/3 of retail for that model year as a general benchmark. Superficial scratches especially on the bottom are nothing to be concerned with.

Welcome to the forum!

Check the mirage drive. If it has a lot of side to side movement when holding the mirage drive by the cranks then it could need to be repaired, have bearings replaced, etc. Make sure the fins aren't bent. When you hold the mirage drive out in front of you and move it back and forth you shouldn't feel any grinding, vibrating or hear any sounds. It should be smooth.

Check the kayak thoroughly for cracks/leaks. Check around scuppers and mirage drive well. Look closely especially if it's a little dirty.

Check rudder, skeg and steering to make sure they are all working properly.

Make sure the seat isn't torn or worn out.

Check rubber seals around hatches.

I can't help with price without knowing what year you are looking at.

Thanks to both of you, noted.

By text, the wife by stated, by SMS, he wants $1800 for one, and $2400 for the newer. I'll post details when they are available for inspection.

Well???

1800 is good for a 2013-14
2400 is reasonable for a 15-16
