Anybody know what the Hobie part # 50406261 consist of?

I have an old boom cap who's connector pin runs vertically - it's broken and I have a new cap from hobie with a horizontal version.

Will the above part get me ready to sail again?

My 17 is an 88 or 89

You are refering to the boom pin? The current pin is flattened to fit in a hinge vertex. The pin rotates within the casting, so I am lost on the vertical / horizontal position of the pin.

A gooseneck update takes a VERY old 17 to current. The original pin was not flattened and a vertex was not used. In addition, the gooseneck in the mast base was allowed to move on a vertical axis. The old pin would connect directly to the gooseneck. Problem was they would bind and also scratch the crossbar.

The update kit includes a forward boom casting and pin, gooseneck, vertex and the connecting hardware.

I have the old style that is broken. Any idea if I can just get the vertex and connecting hardware as I already have purchased TWO forward boom caps?

Any idea on Hobies return policy on drop shipped items - I have gotten no respone from my local retailer on returning one of the forward caps I just purchased.

Thanks for the info. on the update - I will be ordering the kit.

Returns have to come through a dealer it was purchased from. We charge dealers a 15% restock fee.

I am also perplexed, mcnealmike. Does the end cap include the casting?

I have a 79 '17. I suffered a dismasting 3 years back when port side stay separated. The gooseneck and the connecting pin were twisted beyond recognition.

My dealer sold me a new pin (with the flattened end), vertex bearing, and gooseneck. I removed the cap, took out the casting, replaced the bent pin, reassembled the whole thing and now the connecting pin sticks out about 2 inches from the cap. The pin has a small "collar" welded on that looks like it should be flush with the end-cap but it is easily 2 inches away. It used to flex a little side to side, so I lived with it but now it is jammed at an odd angle -it does not stick straight from the end cap.

If I need a casting, how can I find the part without buying an entire $72 upgrade kit that I already have most of?

Any spare parts out there - anybody? Matt?
Maybe I could use a new end cap if it includes the casting Mike. Give me a shout.

Thanks and Happy Sails,
Stephen

Each of the parts is available separately.

Just look at the parts diagram and order what you need.

Thanks Matt - but the detail that I need is not on the parts list.

The part is a casting INSIDE the forward end of the boom, Behind the boom Cap-Fwd part #50512001.

There is a solid aluminum piece that the butt-end of the Gooseneck pin attaches to inside the boom cap.

I guess I need to know if there two different castings, one for the new Gooseneck pin and one for the older pin? :?
> Is that what the total upgrade kit contains?
> Since I have a "total upgrade" done piecemeal, can I just get the upgraded casting from someone?

Again, it is not on any parts diagram.

The front boom casting is all there is... The boom pin inserts through it and is pinned in place by either an "E" clip (old style) or a roll pin. There is nothing else in the booom there.

:D Thank you Matt! A picture IS worth a thousand words.
I have forced the new style gooseneck pin into the old style casting. No wonder it sticks out about 3 inches...
Have a great day - again - thank you! 8)

What is the design reason for having the gooseneck pin slide in and out about 1" from the boom end cap? Just Curious why the gooseneck pin isn't fixed in place. Matt?

When sailing, the boom pushes up against the mast, so the boom pin is compressed into the cap. I'd imagine the 1" play is more of a universal pin fit issue (used on other models) rather than something specifically designed for the 17. They all move a bit which helps release stresses in certain situations.
