G'day Folks

Ive just started racing my getaway with a mixed fleet. Its more of a social outing than serious racing. But having said that, the handicaps are based on boat yardsticks. For example Laser yardstick of 112, Hobie 16 yardstick 82. This is fine except the handicaper cant find a yardstick for the getaway and as such has used the Hobie 16 yardstick for the moment. I wondered if anybody knows of the yardstick that should be applied to the getaway. I think it is fair to say that the Hobie 16 would be more competative than the getaway.

Also since starting racing Ive havent been able to get the getaway to point as high as the other cats in the fleet, Hobie 16, Hobie 14 & Maricat 4.3. Has anyone got any ideas.

Thanks
Eugene (Bathurst, Australia)

Thanks Mark

The website was a great help. My club members and I have compared the Portsmouth tables with the VYC yardsticks and my handycap has now decreased from 82 to 90. It seems the yardstick for a Getaway is about the same as a Hobie turbo or a Nacra 5.2.

As for pointing higher compared to outer cats. I think I can now answer this myself. We have taken to using the windward jib sheet to bring the jib closer to the mast and closing the slot up between the Main and the jib. It seems clear that the Main will point higher into the wind before it luffs. The jib however luffs well before the main, sheeting in the windward jib sheet as well takes the flap out of the jib and lets us point a bit higher.

I can tell you that an N5.2 will smoke both H14 and Getaway.
