I have a 1989 Hobie 16 in very good shape with about 300 lbs of crew on board. My friend has a 1989 Nacra 5.8NA with newer sails. He will have about 400+ lbs of crew. Which of the boats will be faster? Is it a close race? I am unfamiliar with the Nacra boats. Just curious. Thank you.

Likely the Narca 5.8

It is a 19 foot boat with much more hull volume and sail area.

Best way to find out is put some money down, agree to some rules and get after it. Bound to be a good discussion back in the bar.

Unless the NACRA5.8 is crewed by novices and the H16 by experts - the result is certain. and it will not even be close.

According to the Portsmouth numbers the Nacra 5.8 D-PN is 66.6 the Hobie 16 is 76. The Formula 18s with spinnakers are 62.4. This should give you some idea about how much faster the Nacra 5.8 goes around a course. Roughly speaking, in a one hour race, the Nacra 5.8 should give the Hobie 16 about a 10 minute head start.
