Hummingbird side scanning sonar unit & transducer mount

I am thinking of mounting a Hummingbird side scanning sonar unit (fishfinder) http://store.humminbird.com/humminbird-products/sonar-gps-combos/chumminbird-ccombo-p1.html on my soon to be purchased Hobie Pro Angler that will be used on the Texas Gulf of Mexico. They are more expensive, but I think one would give a much better view of what is under and around you as you peddle and troll.

Can a transducer be mounted in a scupper hole and work properly?

You could try it but i think its over kill. Don't get me wrong i use a Humminbird 565 on my PA. I do wish they made some kind of transducer app to the PA. Something like how Ocean kayak did. But sidescan is over kill imo.

It may be considered overkill, especially for those who don't fish a lot, but for guiding, which I do, it has helped tremendously in marking/identifying "areas of interest" for our customers. It also serves as a wonderful tool to clearly see structure below and has allowed us to waypoint tons of different structure-laden areas that we had passed over time and time again.

But to EZ's point, for the weekend warrior, it probably is overkill.

Are you guiding from a kayak, and if so, how do you have your transducer mounted? Overkill or not, if I can mount one of these things on a Hobie Pro Angler, I'm going to do it. I want to see everything I can that's beneath and around me.

I will be in the Gulf of Mexico. I figured I could stow the unit while going and coming through the breakers, mounting it when I'm out and ready to fish.

No need, I installed the transducer to the rudder. Simply used a couple of screws and a supporting bracket. I've had the unit for 3 seasons now and have never had a problem with that install. No need to store the unit when going through the breakers. The transducer and unit itself have taken a beating and literally a couple of hundred trips. Still running perfectly.

Its an expensive unit and if I didn't get a really DEEP discount (priced at the 767 cost), I wouldn't have spent the money. But now that I have it, I love it.

And yes, I'm guiding from a kayak.

Ray, I use
"The Liberator" mounting system

I mounted my FishFinder, my GPS, a rodholder, and the battery to it. It also holds the transducer
(essentially a cutting board with a transducer arm with an elbow joint you can lower or raise to put transducer in or out of the water)
Mounted a Ram Electronics mount to a Ram Ball expanding post which fits in the Hobie sail mast hole.
(on last kayak I used a Scotty Electronics mount on bottom of Liberator)

I bought two 16"x24" cutting boards at WalMart for about 9 dollars each, thnking I'll shape my own mounting board with holes to hang lures off of etc etc.

When I put up the kayak or put it on the trailer, all my electronics attached to the Liberator/cutting board/mounting board, goes in the car trunk. (detachable/portable) So, easy to switch the whole electronics package from one kayak to another.

That is the type/price range I would like to get. The range on the nicer ones in that group is from around $500.00 to $2,100.00. I was thinking about hitting in the middle, and this one gets some great reviews.

Could you post pictures of how the unit looks in your kayak and how the transducer looks on the rudder. I would really appreciate that. The Pro Angler's rubber is hidden away, so the transducer would have less likelihood of damage when loading, crossing the sand bars going beyond the breakers, etc., if it fit the rudder and the area into which it retracts.

I have a hummingbird side image and it work's great on my revo. You have to mount the sonar on the out side of the boat. Do not glue it to your hull. I bought a pontoon fish finder mount and put it on my right side with a ram mount that swings it up. This works great for me when I beach my boat. I could send you pix if you need them. This unit is a must for bass fishing or looking for structure. Te unit needs to be on the out side of the boat.
