My Hobie 21SE has four machine screws at the gunnel just outboard of the crossbars and fastening into the hull in the direction of the center of cross section of the crossbars.
One of the screws came loose. In trying to replace it there was nothing back there to purchase. Suspecting corrosion I went one size up to 5/16 and drilled and tapped but found no metal to purchase. Can anyone tell me the function of these screws?

Screw purpose?

My understanding was that it helped hold the crossbar tube in position for post lamination reasons. Don't think it is needed.

Thanks for the response Matt,
That was my suspicion but it was keeping a bit of anxiety alive in my head about the crossbar socket flying out of the hull at an inopportune moment.
