New member here from the UK, cyber names Roller....anyway I'm totally new to Kayaks, kayak fishing and sailing, however I've just ordered an Island Adventure... :D

My yak should be here in mid August [does anyone know why such a long wait? I ordered mid June] I chose my Yak after watching some fantastic vids on youtube, by a chap called Josh ''Yakabout'' couldn't get a demo on one over here in the UK, but after watching Joshes vids , I was in no doubt what to buy, cheers mate if you're reading, I owe you a schooner or two...

Now as mentioned I've never sailed, how easy is it for a novice like me to learn to sail an Adventure?

Cheers all

Roller

If the wind kicks up too much... furl the sail.

Grab on to something and keep your balance.

Her nose goes into... not over the waves.

Some guys think her rudder is too small.

There is an intro to sailing Hobie pub you can download.

The AI is one of the easy crafts to learn to sail, particularly tacking as you can use the pedal drive to avoid irons (stalling pointing into the wind).

Make sure your order includes the large rudder. I believe it is standard equipment now days.

Welcome Roller. Mate, you're gunna love it. Don't know about the delivery wait over there but it's well worth it. Yea, Josh has supplied us all with some great clips, trouble is he's got bottomless pockets and we can't compete with his set up so nobody talks to him ( only jok'n Josh, ). What part of the UK are you from. I lived in Southampton for a few years so got to know the place pretty well. I wouldn't like to get caught out on those tides and have to drag the AI over 500m of mud flats. You and Aledal should catch up one weekend. He's just down the road. He could sail up to, or you sail down and meet 1/2 way at Jersey. No, wait, I think he's in southern France so you may have to meet up in Portugal. Whatever. Post some pics when you get set up.
Catch Ya.

G'day Roller, great to see you've joined the AI club and yep, it's good to hear I helped inspire the direction you decided to take. That's partly why I do it. My love for the sport goes well beyond a hobby, so promoting the sport, and inspiring people to participate in it is what I'm all about.

Haha Slaughter... not deep pockets. On the contrary... you might be surprised to learn that I am actually bankrupt, and live pretty much from week to week... long story. I am fortunate though, in that I worked with Hobie Aus for a year (so some of that gear was bought at cost, or otherwise supplied to me at the time), and now also work for a Hobie dealer, and have the same luxury. And some of the gear has been supplied as part of sponsorship arrangements as well, with Nitro & Hobie AU. That said, over time, yes, I've spent more than most on the gear I use. But kayak fishing is really the only real 'freetime pastime' I have, so I'm more than happy to spend money to make sure I'm using the very best gear I can get my hands on. Life's too short for crap gear :-)

Thats the way to go Roller. Take your time gearing up. It'll take a few trips out before you really know everything you want and how you're going to mount/store it. Start small and build from there. As you say, if you make good decisions in the gearing up stage, you'll probably spend less in the long run, and maximise the experience for yourself.

Don't forget to pack your AI Roller - by a strange coincidence, those places are all great to sail. You can discover them anew from the water.

Yeh Yakass, don't know if you remember our earlier conversations. You also convinced me to get one, so now I'm also quickly going down the bankrupt trail. But seriously, I think we all would admit it's generally a pretty cheap sport / hobby. ( well that's what I try to tell my female financier ). If we decided that a new tinny with a 1/2 decent motor would keep us happy on the water, we would have spent 3 times what we have spent without a problem.

Roller What part of England are you in. I'd love to get up in The Lakes District with the AI.

ChrisJ I need to talk to you about meeting with you and Stringy at Patonga beach one day. A mate of mine wants to do an article on us for his yachting magazine. He saw you out on the water one day and gave me a ring to see if it was me. It wasn't going fast enough to be me though

Suffolk mate, not far from the river Deben, Orwell, and Stour and a little further north the Norfolk broads

Slaughter, if he saw the boats at Patonga, it may not be Stringy and me. Last time we launched from Patonga, a couple of months ago, we ran into a couple of other guys with AI's. Also, it might have been Stringy and his mate Jason. I'm happy to go for a sail from Patonga - I can usually make it on alternate weekends. Stringy often works or is on call on weekends, so the trick would be to line it up when he is free.

It was stevo and his brother we met on the water that day I think Chris. I'm pretty sure he sails out of Patonga.
Interested in a sail this Saturday or Sunday?
How about you Slaughter?
