Need help with pole holder for Aka arm. Matt?

I really like to fish while sailing the Island.

I find the built in pole holders to be too far behind me and they hold the pole almost vertical which interferes with the sheet lines.

Now I like the Scotty pole holder because it can be tilted nearly horizontal, clear of the lines, and it captures the rod/reel so it won't fall out.

The perfect placement is on the rear aka arms - one on each side; roughly midpoint between the connector pin and the brace assembly. I built something that looks awful and bulky but does work. Yes it is clamped - no holes drilled in my aka arm.

Q. Does Hobie have some hardware/pole holder setup that connects/attaches to the aka arm.?

I saw part number 72023017 a "U" bolt rail base, but that only has a 1" ball and looks like the clamp is too small in diameter to go around the aka arm. Beside it doesn't work with a scotty holder. But that at least is kinda what I need.

Any help?

I made this for the same reason as you. A few $ of PVC and it puts little stress on the aka. Even has a gimble "bolt" to keep the reel up. Works well for me and gets the rod tips farther apart for trolling with two rods. Hope this helps.

Yak, I don't fish, but according to Yakass, there is a RAM mount that can clamp on the aka and a RAM rod adaptor.

I had the same problem wanting to put rod holders on the aka. I tried the ram mount mentioned in the above posted link. The worm gear style i could not get them to hold up more then one or two trips before the rubber was torn up causing the mount to slide all over. I tried several creative variants to make them work then i found the RAM-271U-12 worked beautifully.

On installation i built up a larger support footprint with structural adhesive (JB weld). Nothing fancy just filled in the corners of the brace so that it would act like a wedge if it tried to rotate....and skimmed about .5 inch around the aka to give the JB weld more of a foot print to hold. It was probably overkill but they are holding up. I have fished with them for the last 6 months and they have survived several hard hits. Sharks/kings/cuda/bonita/blackfin tuna. One of the earliest ocean kayaking lessons i learned was how light you have to have the drag. I usually set the drag slightly higher then whatever i am trolling after the strike when you get lined up with the fish and any other rods / equipment out of the way you can throw a drift sock, and pump the drag up. Just be careful....anything can happen on the water. (rant below). The point i was trying to get to is if you run light drag the aka should not see any more force then it sees during regular use.

sorry for the off topic rant...but one more note on green fish. You do not want to pull yourself to a large green fish. This past weekend i hooked up a large fish thought it was worn out enough to bring it up and see what it was. It had dove straight under kayak in about 65ft water as it was getting close to the top it took a hard run to the opposite side of the kayak i was reeling on. (i run a trampoline on one side and could not see what it was) The line got caught on the daggerboard, and like a mayflower pole my fishing line tethered what turned out to be about 5 foot bull shark on a short lease. The laps around the daggerboard / mirage drive rendered my drag / pole useless and now i had a fairly large shark 60+lbs trying to get in my lap. once the panic subsided i pulled the dagger board up and regained control of the situation.

No we don't, but I will suggest this to our Fish guys for research.
