When researching my new AI, i became aware of their tendency to bury the nose, through videos, and peoples writings. So i planned this Wave Deflector, one of the local companies here in Perth make them for there rec ski's, and they are fairly easy to mod to fit the Adventure, this is MkIII...

Not sure if this has been covered elsewhere.

Just a short vid, one of the maiden trips. The WD works well, and even when i caught up on a wave in front and speared through it, the WD pulls the nose up fast.

Enjoy!

Sorry if YT drops the music out....

Might be a few people interested in getting one of these.

Where did you get your wave deflector?

Very nice! Good color match too. How does the installation work on these -- through bolt or were you able to use the original embedded brass inserts for the bow padeye? 8)

Thanks guys, yes they come in a range of colours, and once you modify the shape a bit, fit snugly on the nose, with only the two screws and front handle holding it in place. Also easily removed if it's not required, like in Adventure mode.

A local company in Perth makes them, $20 each i think it was.

Shufoy,

Excellent idea. Video does a very nice job illustrating it, especially when the bow tries to dive under a wave but re-emerges very quickly, like a second or so. The deflector clearly worked.

What do you think of putting deflectors on each of the amas to effectively end the diving under waves problem?

I discussed the problem in my recent picture-story of our 6-day AI-camping trip here in S FL.
http://www.hobiecat.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=70&t=7276&start=90

Scroll down until you see “Flamingo to Chokoloskee, Jan 13-18, 2010”

As I gave more thought to it, the idea of a wave deflector came to me also. I was going to fashion a pretty ugly deflector to try it out. Ironically, I was outside taking pictures of my boats to illustrate some points. When I walked in, looked on the computer and there was your post. I was in semi-shock to see you could buy something off the shelf--great find. Not sure where we can find it in the states, but there must be something similar.

Thanks for your post.

Keith

Considering the ama are held on with only bungee cord, if you pulled up on the front of an ama, I would think it would just stretch the rear bungee instead of giving much lift.

KB, yes, that is possible. You might have to secure the ama to the akas to make a wave deflector work.

ChrisJ--good videos although they were a bit dark, I think I got the right idea. I don't doubt the spray shields deflect the spray. It looked like you were on a beam reach. The diving problem occurs when you are running downwind at about 6 mph (5.2 knots) and higher speeds.

They were actually Bob's clips Keith. I know they weren't downwind, but everyone seemed impressed by the wave deflector clip and that didn't seem like it was taken in very adverse circumstances either. BTW, now that I'm using the AI for camping, I'm noticing what you mentioned - that it's more prone to dipping the bow when the front hatch is loaded up, but it is still greatly mitigated by the sprayshields.

Has anyone in the States found an equivalent wave deflector mentioned by Shufoy

If not, do you think I could order a couple of them from Perth? What might be the
currency exchange rate + shipping?

A question for Shufoy...do you have a contact address (email address) for the Perth
company that made your wave deflector?

Maybe if we ask Matt nicely, he might have the engineers check it out and add it to their catalog?

When i got mine they were $20 Aus, so cheap! Shipping at a guess $50-75? They also had a range of colours, and would probably make them in any colour you wanted.

I did notice today using the yak in Adventure form without sail/outriggers and left the WD on, it creates a bit more splash at the slower pedaling speeds, and i'd probably remove it for nextime.

I noticed from your video that your wave deflector was a color match to
your papaya AI. At the Finn Kayak site you recommended, I could not find any wave deflectors mentioned. I looked at some of the other West Australia manufacture/retailer sites but could not find a yellow wave deflector. Would you happen to remember more details about
where you purchased your deflector?
If I can find the correct site on the Internet...I will try to see if they
would be willing to ship to the U.S. and for what total cost.
If I am successful, I will submit the information to this forum.
Someone else may wish to buy one too.
