How much work is involved in converting to the new rudders?

What do I need to have? (silicone west system tools ect.)

drill
measuring tape
silicone

Pretty easy. I've never done it before but I've read the instructions and heard from Dan Delave how easy it was. Maybe Dan can chime in here with a response.

Is there an instruction for mounting the new Gudgeons?
Pictures or measurements?

Absolutely! It's really pretty simple. All you need is a torch and a sawzall. Oh, and a big giant sledge. A welder wouldn't hurt either, just in case things go sideways.

Thanks Jeremy.

I was wondering do I reuse the old holes and if so which holes in the transom line up with which ones in the gudgeon?

Sawzall , torch , sledge and axe are ready. And a really big drill. anything else ?

Rich

Required equipment for all sorts of catamaran related activities. Might work for cutting those mitres too Matt. :D

So if I follow this correctly. Cut the rudders off with the sawzall. Weld the pieces back together. Then dig a big hole with the backhoe. Put the boat in the hole cover with dirt. File as stolen and claim insurance , and buy boat with new rudders already on it.

I miss anything?

Wouldn't get too excited as have not seen a standard conversion yet as everybody has a different idea. I would definitely advise to glue them also. I tried to to fit them to old holes with the gudgeon upside down with catastrophic result. Now have fitted the right way up and also made a new backing plate as the plate glassed into transom does not go low enough.

Quick Question.
Instead of drilling and taping new holes and filling in old holes could I just cut a spacer out of Aluminum and reuse the stock holes?

After doing some research, I would just install the replacement gudgeons that came with the new rudders. There have been no reported failures from doing this upgrade. Use some backing washers and through-bolt the bottom screws where they don't hit the laminated aluminum plate.
