The fins justifiably get a lot of credit for the Drive performance, But there are some other significant elements that are often overlooked.
1.
Setting of the fins: Most people use them just as they come from the factory. The factory doesn't adjust them -- they assemble them as they come from the fin supplier. The supplier doesn't have a clue about clews!
I reset some Turbos for an experienced Hobie fisherman yesterday at the end of his run. He went back out to try them and was amazed at the difference in ease of pedaling for his speed and acceleration. All this time he was blissfully using these fins below their potential -- they had been set too tight. Bottom line -- adjusting the fins makes a big difference.
2.
Condition of the Drive: Both lubrication and adjustment are important. Your fins should move like warm butter when pedaled -- no effort out of the water. Cables set too tight bind; too slack they waste part of the stroke.
3.
Condition of the user: This can make a 1/2 MPH difference between users with the same equipment -- easy to overlook when you have different gear.
4.
Pedal settings: Legs that don't get fully extended lose power.
Performance is not just in the fins. These other factors can easily make a greater difference than fin choice. The Hobie FAQ section has information on most of these topics. Make sure you're getting the most for your effort!
