I recently bought some turbo fins for my mirage drive. (which is from 2008 and has V1 masts sprockets, chains, and drums) Upon fin replacement, I noticed that a hairline crack had developed in the sprocket, at the point where the mast inserts. Thus I concluded that the best thing to do is exchange the V1 turbo fins(set screw) for a set of V2 turbo fins with the threaded mast.
Obviously to upgrade the masts to V2, one has to also upgrade the sprockets to V2. The store where I purchased (Austin Kayak, who are normally great and highly recommended by me) told me that the V2 sprockets will not work with the V1 chain assembly, and that I would therefore need to upgrade the chains, and consequently the drum assemblies all to V2.

After spending $150 for this complete V2 upgrade, I just do not believe that last statement is true. After the most careful inspection, I believe that the V1 chain meshes perfectly with the V2 sprocket. The two chains are both even stamped with the same code number -- 35SS. The only difference between the two seems to be that the V2 has an extended cable region that allows it to fit onto the redesigned V2 drums.

But it seems that for the person who is not eager to pay for the expensive full V2 upgrade (drums, chains, sprockets, masts), it is possible to Just upgrade the sprockets and masts in order to get the benefit of the sturdier brass-reinforced threaded V2 sprockets.

Hope this helps others, and of course, please correct if this info is not accurate.
Frank

No problem with upgrading just the sprockets and masts.

If you want to upgrade the drums (Mickey Mouse ears) then you need to replace the 3 chain assemblies also.
