Our Oasis 2010 has a rudderproblem.
When moving the tiller from port to starboard I feel a big resistance when in the middle position.
When applying more force, I feel and hear the lines stretch, at a certain force the lines jump loose and the rudder deflects to starboard in a fraction of a second.
This is what I found inside the kayak:

The tiller is rubbing the bungee of the rudder-up line

The two rudderlines rub against the sittingmould

The rudderlines rub against each other AND the knots in the lines hook into each other !!!

This is how it looks if I pull the lines apart, this helps for while but with time the problem returns.
The lines creap back together.
I tried teflonspray to reduce the force with which the knots hook into each other, but :(

I had that happen on one of my AI's. I shortened both ends of one line and added a extra piece of spectra line to keep the knots out of each others way. On the underside tiller, I'd try bending the medal slightly.

Good luck.

you could try individually wrapping each knot with a little bit of electrical tape as just a quick dirty fix. that would likely keep them from hanging up on each other. also maybe you could try installing a padeye internally and running one of the lines through it to keep them separated. that could also work to keep the bungee shock cord from interfering as well.

Thanks for the tips. :)
But I'll await the feedback from Mr Miller and the specialists from the factory

I'd just like to mention that I just took delivery of a 2010 Oasis this weekend and have not noticed this problem. But thanks very much for the detailed photos just in case it starts happening on my boat.

Skadar, have you looked inside to see what the difference might be? Just wondering.

I'll see if I can get my camera in there tonight to check out the details.

Here's what I see inside my new Oasis...

I should mention that in all of the pictures below, the Kayak is hanging on its left-hand side. Things may look different when it is in the normal use position.

BELOW: I don't see any binding here, but the cord rubbing along the bolt threads may become a problem over time. I suppose if I deflected the rudder to extreme left, the bungie could hop over the button and become lodged as yours has.
Image

BELOW: My knot clusters seem to have enough separation, though I didn't try deflecting the rudder to see if they passed each other.
Image

BELOW: It appears that, for some reason, my rudder cables cross each other at a position farther behind the knot cluster than yours.

Hello Skadar,
It looks a bit different in your Oasis.
It looks possible that the bungee could get caught on the button, have you tried to swing the tiller full left?

It's because the bungee is under the tiller that the spectra line is pushed upwards and is touching the thread.
In mine the spectraline is not touching the bolt.

Why even have the spectra to spectra knot splices?
Can one simply (difficultly) re-run longer grey spectra lines and forego the troublesome spectra to spectra splices?
Can the SS bolt carefully be cut shorter or replaced with a shorter SS bolt, so as not to become a rub source?

Can the bungee anchor point be relocated?

Looks as if the spectra to spectra splices are intended to make the factory install easier, in that the splices may end up nearer to an access point? The location of the rudder control may be awkward?

Question to Mr Miller, did you get a response from the factory concerning this problem please? Our Oasis is a year old and the blocking rudder is the only reoccuring problem we have with our wonderful kayak.

I recently got in a dangerous situation.
I was hit full in the side by the bow wave of a speeding powerboat.
Due to the blocked rudder I could not steer into it and we almost capsized :(

I'll ask them again to have a look.

To clear the bungie, you can move the bungie to the other side of the crank and rotate the black bungie terminal about 90 degrees and it will pass clear of the end of the crank. The steering lines are twisted which is causing the knots to interfere with each other. If you disconnect the line that is trapping the other line and place the steering line on the other side of the opposite steering line that should free up the lines so they don't interfere with each other.
