WOW, Matt and Hobie,
Once again, you folks demonstrate how Hobie listens to its customer base in terms of upgrades/changes/improvements! I don't know how important the sprocket guards are, or were, but at least I won't be getting my jeans tangled up with the steel chain and sprocket like I used to do on a bike with no chain guard when I was a kid!
Not trying to play the critic (no--seriously!), but I do wonder in areas with a lot of floating marsh or sea grass (like the Gulf of Mexico at certain times of the year, or right after a big thunderstorm) if the lack of a sprocket guard might cause floating vegetation or other junk to get trapped in there under the chain. I kind of doubt it, since I imagine the SS chain and SS sprocket will macerate and chew up such stuff (unless it is string!) pretty thoroughly before spitting it out.
But hey, I guess we can cross that bridge when (or if) we ever get to it. All I know is that my old school (pre-2005) SS sprocket drive has never had any problem with stuff getting caught up between the chain and sprocket, or under the guard. In fact, I am still using it just as it came from the dealer, and have never had to adjust anything on it in terms of the sprockets, chain, or tension. Just ordered the new ST fins, so I hope my luck continues…
But, thanks again, Hobie.
