Got my new Blue Oasis, now some questions..

First of all on the inside of the front floor hatch is a little grey tool attached to the lid What's this for?

Second question is about the peddles.

It seems pretty uncomfortable and hurts my feet in just a few peddle cycles. Do my feet just need to toughen up or do I need to place my feet up in the peddle more. I try to get my foot arch centered on the peddle which seems to alleviate some of the pain but the peddle straps are too small, seems the straps are made for a hobbit. Also I cant believe this forum doesn’t allow direct picture uploading, how many people have a web page that they can link to, common guys!


Any suggestions?

King the first time I took my Outback out I was sick. I thought I had made a huge mistake. By the end of the day I was feeling a little better. I've been out in it about 5 times now and I think it's the greatest kayak out there. I had to relearn how to fish my style of fishing. I'm eat up with it now. I had the same problem you did my first time out. I made me some straps and like them a lot better. As far as posting pictures I use flickr.

Pedal straps are adjustable, so that is the first place to start. Also be sure you understand the fore and aft adjustments of the pedal shafts. Next, maybe with the looser straps you could then wear shoes of some kind?

"Hurts my feet" is a pretty broad statement. Is there anyway for you to elaborate what or where the pain is?

The arch and ball of the foot hurts most, seems the peddle should land on the arch of the foot but the straps no matter how adjusted wont allow it. Does it just take some getting used to?

If it's gray and looks similar to this, it's your spare rudder pin (in case you ever need it).


The foot and strap usually go on the pedal like this:

Notice the pedal is on the ball of the foot, not the arch. If this hurts your arches, you can wear shoes, remove the straps and place your arch over the pedal while the shoe supports the arch until it gets "conditioned". Learn what an inflamed plantar facia is, how to recognize it and how to stretch this ligament so it doesn't become a problem for you. If you're not used to the pedaling, just take it easy. You'll be going an hour non-stop in no time!

roadrunner is this something I should keep in my 2010 outback?

First check both hatches and see if you already have one. They don't cost much, don't weigh much and could really come in handy if your old one breaks (can be replaced on the water). All the newer 8" hatch lids have the provision to carry them and many (if not all) Twist N Stow rudder models now come with a spare -- nice touch Hobie!

The much faster Adventure Islands have broken some of the earlier pins because of the continuous high pressures on the rudder, but I've never had one fail since the T & S rudders started using plastic pins -- so far.

Incidentally, if your rudder ever fails, it's quite easy to continue pedaling while using your paddle as a rudder. Everyone should try it just as a precautionary measure.

I'll try some stretching exercises on my feet before I go next weekend, and yes the thingy in my hatch lid is another rudder pin, thanks for the heads up.
