I agree with you on the KFS forum. It always seems to degrade to Hobie bashing.

I have been on KFS forums for 4 years, and I disagree with the statement above. KayakFishingStuff.com and the members there have probably been responsible for the sale of more Hobie kayaks than any other factor in Hobie's kayak selling experience. I can't prove it, but that's my bet. We have bought because of the positive information posted there, and there are thousands of us.

Yes, there are some negative remarks, but those are usually from people who don't even own one. Luna, for one, always kids about Hobies, but that is because he is so dedicated to another brand. Generally, you have a site of true Hobie worshipers on KFS.com. When we were discussing the pros and cons of what would be needed for a great fishing kayak, which eventually turned into the Revolution, there were several hundred posts, with everyone wanting to help form the foundation for a great Hobie kayak. The name, Revolution, was even borne there on KayakFishingStuff.

Another site that has had good Hobie posts is http://www.texaskayakfisherman.com, and I have made some of those over the years. Several people are now using the Hobies to force through the surf to get beyond the breakers for fishing several hundred yards out to several miles.

On the hatch leakage problem, psychoclown, how did you correct that, larger seals? Do you have a link to a post with pictures? I would appreciate seeing what you did. I always understand better with pictures.

And as far as flipping, Matt said it best; any kayak can flip, but it can flip far more easily when its sidewise to the waves, and the waves are 3 or 4, or more, feet high. For me, open hatches are a no no; I keep everything locked down tightly just because of worries of something like this, never any hatches remaining open, because all they will do is collect and store shifting water load. I own the best PFDs I can buy, and I've got several of them for some reason; mainly I guess because I see one I think might save my life better than the last, so I buy it, too.

It is sometimes difficult to stay out of rough seas, but watching the weather to see what may happen is the best path followed by the use of good common sense when thinking of going out on to any large body of water. What may not be too bad on land, can kill you in a kayak. The biggest problems encountered on the bays surrounding the Gulf in Texas, and the Gulf itself, are usually caused by lack of attention to weather conditions, too much ego, and a lack of common sense. About 3 years ago in March, a group of kayakers had a tournament when the weather forecast was for a strong Norther coming in with at least 30 MPH winds and falling temperatures. Rather than call the meet off, they went. The Coast Guard had to rescue 2 people who would otherwise have died from drowning or hypothermia. The rest tucked tail and headed back to the shore they never should have left that morning.
