Hobie Seat or not to Hobie Seat

Ok I just installed the pegs from my Hobie Seat onto the Skwoosh seat(local dealer is out till next week then getting another set). Using a white out pen I marked the center of the webbed band and spaced the screws 3" apart. I drilled a hole thru the fabric inserted the screws/washer and tightened on the pegs.



I pushed the pegs into the seat well holes then I removed the bungee hooks from the factory padeyes behind the seat and hooked the back straps on. Tightened the lower strap till snug and then tighten top portion.





I use the factory padeyes by the carry handles not the ones closer to the seat and that gives me better back support and less downslide of the backrest.





I will add two more padeyes to attach the bungee to since the factory ones are stronger for seat attachment.

There is no seat slip and the backrest is very tight and supportive.

Looking at the Outback layout which is quite different from a revolution I can see the factory padeyes by the rear rod holders are good for connecting or you could add ones closer to seat well. The front factory padeyes are a good distance from the seatback to give good support. The added pegs will help a great deal to prevent any shifting.

Hey Revo, I see that you mounted a cam cleat for your anchor on top of the rail near your drink holder. I got a cam cleat but cannot reach from below to secure screws. Did you use rivets? I would not think they would hold.

The cam cleat is only screwed in through the hull. I use for the main sheet when sailing and it holds just fine with only screws. I run the main sheet through the rail mounted padeyes and lock it in the cam cleat when cruisin (hand gets cramped holding the line for too long especially in a good wind) . I actually never thought to use it for my anchor line. I tie anchor line to the cleat and pass through a carabiner on the ring of my anchor trolley. The anchor line is on a cuban yoyo that I slip over a rod holder.

I am keeping the hobie seat and replacing the pegs when my dealer has them. I have the padded i comfort cushion on it and will use that with my other revolution and keep that seat as a spare.

The one inch wellnuts have not slipped a bit and are still holding strong. I have even used the bar to slide the revo onto the top of my Xterra though I put a handle behind the seat for that purpose just have grabbed the sidekick bar instead. There has been no sign of loosening of the mounting brackets since I went to the 1" wellnuts. Since that is the location I picked for my sidekick bar I have no choice but to use them unless I put in another hatch in the well to reach that area. Definitely not a location if you want to use through bolts. Not on the revolution anyway. Last couple times sailing I put some presure on them too sailing in 15-20mph with the sidekicks set a little higher was able to hike over substantially. Even got nervous a few times of turtling but stayed upright.

Thanks a lot for the most instructive and useful explanation & photos, which I will use for installing the Skwoosh seat into my Outback. I must also add that I've purchased a Hobie comfort seat which I fitted to the original seat and found this to be comfortable indeed too! No more 'wooden butt' at the end of a kayak trip with this new comfort seat.

My husband is not tall (5'6'') but does have back problems and has discomfort with the 2009 Revolution seat. He says it is too short and he feels like he is doing a "perpetual sit-up". If he actually leaned back in it he would go over backward. No amount of adjustment seems to help. My 2010 seat is much taller, for sure. We have not traded as of yet, but I am very curious. Just how tall is the 2006 seat, and are they still available? Should I order from my dealer or direct from Hobie?

2013 Revolution 11 (2 of them!)

The dreaded sore back. Everyone that goes out on the family kayaks always says that they have sore backs. I have an Extrasport Baja high back pfd that has built in lower back padding. I think it was $59.99 back in 2007. My back is never sore when it's worn. The need for rolling in sit inside kayaks seems to be the reason for the odd design of kayak seats. On the other hand If you make the seatback to high you may also have difficulty reaching aft. I always adjust the seatback around to different positions for comfort throughout the trip. I suppose you could always go with the lazyboy Pro Angler seat option. One of these days soon I hope to be sitting in that comfortable new seat. I've thought about trying new seat ideas in the past but never wanted to buy something that might not work. Good Post.

I use a fully padded high back boat seat that i slightly modify in my outback.You sit higher but its not too high,i have been out in some rough conditions and it has performed like a champ.(amazingly comfortable).It also does not get in the way of the center hatch, I dont own a camera, heck i dont even own a computer (i borrow this one) so no pics are available but its something anybody can figure out with a little creativity.
