Herbaldew, another difference I can see is the two-blade prop and three-blade one.

Oops, grabbed wrong pic - that is a Travel 503, I have a Travel 1003 which has a two-blade prop.

I have used a three-blade from the Travel 503 on my 1003 and it didn't cavitate with it either.

Version II is on the workbench now. Much happier with this one; more stable, better use of space, puts mounting board upright, not at an angle. I will post photos tomorrow and write some comments.

Version II works great.

Image

I have moved the board behind the posts and inserted a wedge to make it sit upright, not an an angle. Now the motor sits vertical in the water. Still getting cavitation, but I think the foil on the shaft is good. I put my hand in front of the shaft to form a shield and it reduced the cavitation noise significantly.

Image

With the board at the back, I now have room in front of it for the battery box, and can still get the wheels in as well. And I still have room for my tackle box at the back without fouling access to the rear hatch.

Image

The 40mm pipe was a bit loose in the rod holder hole so I have wrapped about an inch of the pipe with 3mm rubber at the top of the well. This now wedges the pipe in place, and gives protection to the rod holder well. It doesn't move at all, but I still put the bungee strap over both sides, just to be sure.

For a simple kill switch, I put this mono headphone jack/socket in the neutral line with a wire loop into it. I can attach a tether and if I go overboard the motor will stop when the plug pulls out. The blue plugs in the background allow me to loop the connection back in in case I lose the kill-switch plug.

The kill switch is thinking outside the box 8) . Will it take the amps with out heating up?

No problem. The internal connectors are quite solid, but I will keep an eye on it.

Yes, outside the box. I know I am probably overKILLing it with thinking, and I don't really expect to fall off. But stupidity comes upon me at the most unlikely moments, and the old Boy Scout motto must be obeyed.

Well, not really. I am actually just having fun with the inventive side of me.

My power boat uses a safety switch. Socket mounted in dash (contacts on back) and a plastic plug connected to helicoil. Clip heli coil to body. If fall overboard helicoil pulls plastic plug out, breaking circuit to kill motor.
Built for saltwater use. Would work well in your situ. Just mount plug into battery pack and wire in contacts. Everything would be kept dry and only plastic bits exposed to water.

I googled 'outboard motor kill switch' and got a number of hits on ebay.
This one shows a picture which will give you an idea of what I mean.

Thanks for that info David. I have one coming from China (eBay) for $13 Aust including postage. I'll see how it goes. Would have bought it from the us for $13 US, but then it would have added US$28 postage. I know, you gets what you pays for. But if it works then craps out, I'll pay out for the better quality. If it works and doesn't crap out, I guess I win.
