@Roadrunner - That is some amazing speed for 90 minutes. Did you guys test before and after your hull modifications? I am curious to know how much of a difference that made! Also, would you be able to explain in better detail how you filled in the scratches on your hull, and what product(s) you used to ?paint? it? How essential do you believe the foam pillars to be?

@Wintersum - I did a speed test the other day as one person and the boat (albeit not improved like road runner). There was a 2knot current. Down current, pedaling all day pace of 180 watts, I went 7knots. Up current with same effort, I went 3 knots. I figure that if you average that out, it is about 5 knots for one person at all day pace. The odd thing is that when I sprint (i am not a good sprinter, so maybe 500 watts), the boat barely goes any faster. In fact, I only seem to add about 0.5 knots to my all day pace by sprinting. As a result, I end up doing most of my travel with a heart rate of 70bpm. I am a strong endurance cyclist who can put in 240 watts for hours.. but all that seems to be doing is wearing out the drives so I end up pedal relatively casually for me. Maybe @fusioneng has some advice for me (I am very interested in trying the larger fins, but do not know which parts to buy) As a side note, I will attache a photo of my Turbo fins, because they are much more twisted than what I see in other people's photos. Maybe that is why pedaling hard hardly increases my speed?

Finally, if I put on both amas, my "all day pace" drops to 3.5 knots. That is a big drop! My boat definitely has quite a few bottom scratches, which is why I am looking to restore the surface to possibly regain some speed. As @fusioneng has mentioned in other posts, going along at 3.5 knots is dull. I am happiest over 5 knots.

Today I took the boat out in somewhat protected waters with wind 20 knots, gusting to 40. The fastest I could go was 8knots on a close reach or a broad reach (beam reach was too scary to test for long with the steep waves) with the sail furled so the square top was mostly exposed. It amazes me that my max speed in these conditions are still slower that some of the speeds mentioned in this post. I am wondering what I am doing wrong!

at the same time I'm beyond the displacement speed of the standard TI hull, (which hits you like a brick wall), physics are hard to overcome.

From https://www.omnicalculator.com/sports/hull-speed
18.5 ft TI speed "limit" = 5.764kt
16.5 ft AI speed "limit" = 5.443kt

Quote:
A boat's hull speed limits how fast it can travel efficiently. When traveling at hull speed, the boat's bow wave and stern wave have synchronized and constructive interference occurs, which allows the boat to move very efficiently. However, at speeds greater than hull speed, a vessel's nose automatically starts rising as the vessel tries to climb its bow wave. This process is called planing, and it wastes lots of energy. Trying to move faster than the hull speed will therefore require more and more thrust (whether that comes from sails, rowing, or engines) in exchange for smaller and smaller gains in speed as more energy is wasted angling the boat upwards.
...
Although the physics behind hull speed is sound, it is heavily dependent on the hull's shape. Long and thin hulls with piercing designs can easily break their hull speed without planing.
