Is there a suggested span between the bars to haul the '09 Outback?

I have a full size pickup with a topper, 8' bed. The topper has a bar at the front and rear so there is an 8' span between the two racks for a 12' kayak. There is no bar in the middle so it would only be secured at either end of the boat and a bow and stern line.

Is this going to be secure enough for long distance highway hauling or do I really need something to tie in the middle also? I'm concerned about the amount of stress at the center of the boat with highway wind.

Sounds perfect. Additional forward line is suggested to help prevent initial lift from wind.

I carry my Outfitter on bars mounted 6 feet apart on my 8 ' pickup topper. I use only securing straps at the bars, no front tie-down. The mounts, bars and pads are Yakima. The Hobie rides right side up and I've traveled 2,500 with it so far.
