I have two Outfitters bought 3 years ago (V1 drives). The rear drives both have Turbo fins for my wife and I and the front drives have ST fins for the kids. I was doing inspection and lube after a 12 mile run and noticed that both drives with the larger fins have split below where the set screw tightens on the center of the sprocket shaft. Have others experienced this? Is this improved in the V2 drives?

I have 2 mirage drive units but haven't had any problems in over 2 years. Here is a link that may have pictures of what you are experiencing that Roadrunner did. If that is what happened, there is an explanation on why and the remedy.

Hope this helps or gets you in the right direction.

No, this is a different problem. I have in the past bent the mast shafts, had the sprocket shaft holes enlarge, stripped the mast set screws in the sprockets, broken the sprockets, and stripped the pedal adjustment holes on the drums. (Did I mention I have very strong legs?) Those problems I understand, have fixed, and carry spares for. They are also all improved with the V2 drives. This is a new problem I have not seen before. The sprocket shaft (my term) is the shaft the sprockets rotate on and runs fore/aft in the drive. The bottom of the center section of the drive holds the shaft in the center and at each end. The part in the center has a set screw to keep the sprocket shaft from sliding forward or backward and popping out of the end support holes. The bottom of this center section split below the set screw. Looks like I'll need to completely disassemble the drive to replace the middle piece. Probably a good time to do all the other V2 upgrades, I guess. I could not find a part number for this center piece of the drive.

Matt - I am available to beta test any new drive prototypes! Ha ha.

Peter, it sounds like a cracked spine. If I remember correctly, Yakaholic had this problem a year or two ago. I don't remember if he repaired or replaced it. Spines run about $20 and require a complete disassembly.

With your legs, you would definitely benefit from the latest V-2 upgrades. The drums are stronger and wear better, having glass filled nylon. They retain the crank arms better so skipping holes from flexing crank arms is virtually a thing of the past. The V-2 sprockets no longer wallow or have mast retention problems (as long as you use Locktite on them). No set screws to back out.

That doesn't mean they don't wear, it's just a lot harder to break the stuff than it used to be for someone with your strength! Keep in mind that many worn (and some damaged) parts can be reversed to present new wear surfaces (including drums with distorted pin holes).

Lets see -- things that have been upgraded in the past 3 years -- drums, chain/cables, sprockets, masts, splined drum shaft, crank arms, crank arm caps. Same spine though as far as I know.

After you tally the costs, you might consider replacing the whole Drive with an '09 and epoxying yours together as a spare. BTW, that set screw doesn't have to be tight, just snug and stable. Over tightening the Allenhead screw can pre-load and stress that area. 8)

Yeah, I have been debating whether to buy parts and repair as V2 or just get new V2 drives. Given the price (list $475 with Turbo fins), I may do both - buy one new and rebuild one. Anybody know where to get the best prices on the complete drive with Turbo fins and the individual parts?

On Saturday I passed a powerboat in a no-wake zone. His passengers made fun of him.

You can buy the V2 sprockets and masts. The mast shafts are now screwed down to a fairly large insert inside the sprocket unit instead of the set screw arrangment. I think this new design spreads the load of the mast much better and will avoid further cracking. I have done the upgrade and its doing well.

No change to the spine in that regard. Possibly an over tensioned set screw? Thats the only type of failure I have heard of.
