Have my Outback for a couple months now and decided to join a "Nature Float" at a local lake I haven't been to before. Come to find out the average lake depth is 10' and all the bays the nature float went into were overgrown with lilly pads and what the naturalist referred to as the "underwater forest" of some kind of a pine looking bush. Needless to say me and the yak struggled horribly trying to navigate through this mess. I was paddling with the rudder up and had the mirage drive fins against the hull but it was still to much to make it through. Finally found a place with a little clear water to put the fins down and pull the drive out. Was able to paddle fairly easily out of the mess after that and into clear water where I could peddle again. Even with the fins against the hull the fins were acting almost like an anchor keeping me from getting through.

I fish the west coast and found the only way to get through kelp is to pull the drives including the rudder. It's smooth sailing after that. I am convinced the Outback to be the best fit for me of any Kayak including the new Pro Angler. It is small enough to handle mounting the Yak on the racks of my truck (pretty high), dog rides in comfort and cool in the rear. I'm using the turbo's and might give the large rudder a try but pretty happy with what I have.
