Review of the Oasis Tandem Kayak by Paddling.net

The only thing that confused me about this review was the fact that the writer says it weighs 90lbs???? Sounds like the 2009 model had quite a few improvements.

I agree with the review that the Turbo fins should be standard equipment.

I believe he estimated the weight at 90#. The listed weight is 68# (that's actually the unrigged weight). I just weighed an '07 model on a scale at 77# (rigged with rudder system, hatches, hardware, etc.) but without seats, paddles or Drives. The '09 catalog weight is the same and should net out within a pound or two. Still, not a small or light boat by any means.

A couple of additional notes on the review: All Hobie carts float and can be used to roll the boats into the water, not just the Trax cart. The '09 Oasis also comes with side handles for the first time (these can also be retrofitted) which makes it much easier to handle than the earlier models. All '09 Hobies come with the more durable "V2" sprockets and masts on the Drives -- an excellent improvement IMO.

I have to admit, I am getting very discouraged. My 65lb Wilderness System is looking better every day. I have a bad back, and even with a cart the 90lber would be pushing it. With the stepper/peddle systems on these kayaks, I'm sure the extra weight is necessary to support that kind of action.

Perhaps they will release something light down the road. The only other way we could go is with two lighter kayaks I suppose. Food for thought for sure...

Just curious -- have you actually weighed your 65# Wilderness Systems kayak? It may be heavier than you think.

No, we haven't weighed her but at best she can't be more than 69lbs. I know I have a heck of a time when we load all of our stuff in her and the we portage her down to the beach.

But, both of us are wicked adventurous, so no doubt, we will probably still make that trip to San Diego to check them out. As the Oasis is a new model, I might wait for the 2010 release to see what improvements come out as I typically don't like to even buy a new model car within the first two years.
