Kayak Carts

Hello, first off, I am a new Hobie Outback owner. I just decided to pick up a Hobie for an upcoming trip and love it so far!

I am looking at picking up another kayak cart (so my guests can have a cart as well) and was wondering about the scupper style carts that Hobie sells...is there some extra re-inforcement in the Hobies that prevents the carts from damaging the scupper plugs? I have always thought this would be the easiest type of cart to use but have also always heard it is very rough on the scuppers?

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

As long as the cart goes all the way through the scupper holes (and out the other side) it should be fine. If the cart is only part way through the scupper holes, and hits a rock or anything that jolts it, it can rip or crack the scuppers. The newer Hobie carts include a part on top of each side that pulls up and then pins into a hole in the side of the top of the cart that won't let the cart come (partway) out, both so it can't damage the scupper holes, and so it doesn't drop out while lifting, etc. while transporting.

I own two of the older Hobie scupper carts and added straps with clips for the same reasons. They work well too.

We bought an Oasis, and our dealer didn't have the color we wanted in stock, so he has ordered one for us. A month now, and it isn't here yet. He had a boat that was a warranty return that he loaned to us to use until ours gets here, and I built a wheel set to use. I made my wheel set about 6 to 8 inches taller than the ones that Hobie sells, as I didn't want to bend over to pull the kayak along. The other day, I tried to bump the boat over a curb, and the cart holes in the boat broke. They separated from the top skin, and broke, and bent on the lower skin. I am glad I didn't have this happen on our new boat that isn't here yet. I would not recommend using the cart holes to move a boat, but get a cart that straps onto the bottom of the boat. I am going to modify my wheel set, and put runner type supports about 3 feet long (fore to aft) that the boat will rest on, rether than use the cart peg holes. It is getting to the point on the time the new boat should be here, (and isn't) I may take the color our dealer has in stock, and put it up for sale. My wife really dislikes the available color.

The taller the cart, the further the boat rides from the axle and the greater the stress and shock load on those scupper holes. Hopefully your carts legs are reasonable snug in the holes also so they aren't knocking around. I'd recommend shortening up that cart before your boat comes! With the standard cart there is no bending necessary when pulling. Borrow one from the dealer and try it.
