Hello, I'm a proud new owner of a PA 12 and a complete newbie when it comes to kayaks. I'm trying to find out the best way of pulling my kayak out of the water from a boat ramp(which is typically concrete) and minimizing the scratching that is done on the hull. I have a heavy duty cart from Hobie.

When I launch, I put the bow of the kayak in first, then lift the back end to let the cart release from the bottom. I don't think the actual launching of the kayak causes much concern, it's when I come back to the boat ramp. When I come back to the boat ramp, I come in bow first. The bow of the kayak is partially on the concrete, then I hop out and have to tip the kayak on it's side to get the cart put in place which then my kayak rubs against the concrete. Am I trying to baby the kayak too much and being paranoid or is there a better process to take when pulling the kayak out of the water?

Any feedback is appreciated.

Thanks

Congratulations on your new Hobie. After removing or securing all gear, you can jack the boat up on its side against your leg while in the water (about mid calf deep), then guide the cart in the scuppers with one hand while balancing the boat with the other. This works well with a standard cart, but may or may not with the HD cart. Practice makes a lot of difference in this ritual. The most important thing is not to have any "gear adrift" in the boat or you'll find it in the water. 8)

If you are launching from a ramp all you have to do is back the kayak down the ramp till the cart is in enough that you can pull it out and just reverse the process to get it out of the water. The heavy duty cart is not very buoyant and it's very easy to do. The beach wheels are to buoyant to do it easily. This keeps you from having to unload kayak. There is a video on the forum somewhere that someone did something with ropes that looked real slick.
