I've had this motor since 2013. The battery seems to be failing now. I cruise around at various speeds, but recently a battery which shows 85% remaining charge drops instantly to 5%. I am able to recharge it to 100% overnight, but the same thing happens the next day. Torqeedo says that it sounds like the battery will no longer retain capacity. They offered a trade in @ half price.

Any body else experience premature battery life on this very expensive battery?

Could be the way it was stored long term I suppose... they have recommendations on their site for best battery life.

http://www.torqeedo.com/us/en-us/service-centre/faq.html

Quote:
What is the life expectancy of the battery?

The life expectancy of a lithium battery does not really depend on the charging cycles. It is not subject to memory effect, either, i.e. you can fully charge it after each trip irrespective of the charge status shown in the display.

Generally speaking, a capacity loss of approx. 4 % per year is to be expected. Capacity loss will, however, accelerate if the battery is permanently exposed to heat.

While there are no concerns about using the battery in high temperatures, we recommend that you take the battery out of the sun and store it in a cool place after use. Your battery must be returned to a Torqeedo Service Center for service 8 years after the date of manufacture.

Could the heat be an issue?

Well thanks Matt for the response. This is not an issue that is easily supported. I treat this battery (and all my tech stuff) with kid gloves. It is NEVER exposed to sunlight except for the times I take it out my trunk & put into the PA14's front hatch. The heat in the front hatch of my kayak would never exceed 100 degrees F.

I recharge after each use...in my garage ... & disconnect it from the charger once 100% charge is reached.
I cannot image anyone taking better care of the battery than I have.

Perhaps I got a lemon. Again, as memory maker says at times concerning Hobie's interest in supporting the PA line, if Hobie wishes to support the Torqeedo Evolve, then please talk to Torqeedo...$600 for 3 years use (btw 1 year after the warranty expired) is not what we, as users, expect after that great expenditure.

I wonder what your counterpart at Torqeedo might say?

I am not the Torqeedo tech / warranty guy, so only suggesting a possible reason for the failure.

Not sure what you mean by that question... They offered to extend a significant discount right? You can try and push them a little harder I suppose. I would have no documented details on your purchase or use history, so perhaps have your dealer go to bat for you direct with Torqeedo or file a claim through your dealer so our warranty manager is aware and could comment to torqeedo via a specific claim.

Thanks Matt for responding with your suggestion.

I am surprised that Hobie doesn't have my purchase history. I bought the Evolve2 system from Hobie. My dealer ordered from Hobie California who shipped it to him. When I had issues & had to return it to Hobie for warranty work, I gave it to my dealer who shipped it to whomever Hobie shipped it to. It was Hobie (you personally) who gave me Torqeedo Sven's name & contact number when I had questions that took too long relaying it through Hobie California.

My question concerning your counterpart at Torqeedo was meant to convey that I do not feel Hobie's support of the Evolve2. It was a $2,100 purchase at that time. I believe the battery was $600 of that. $200 a year (for 3 years use) & another $300 to replace it, is not my idea of a reliable product. I wondered what your Torqeedo counterpart in parts sales might say since it appears that if I don't have a lemon, then this battery problem is larger than me.

Torqeedo tech folks (who btw are very responsive & supportive) did not offer any solution other than replace. I thought that if you parts sales folks want to sell more of these you might want to work together so that these kinds of messages don't end up in these forums.

Sorry Matt that I had to vent. I see through these forums that you are very supportive of Hobie & helpful on these forums, but.....$2,100 + $300 for a Torqeedo system & a replacement battery is almost as much as I paid for my entire PA14.

I am sorry for your issue. Our part of this kit is only the mounting system. Torqeedo is 90% of this product and handles all warranty directly when replated to motor, cables or battery.

We would have the dealers details of the purchase from us, but not your details. The warranty would have been directed to Torqeedo.

Have the dealer contact our warranty manager as I suggested. He can then try with Torqeedo for a better solution for you.
